Runners Wrap Up Season At Midwest Regional
KENOSHA, Wis. – The Michigan Tech cross country teams wrapped up the 2013 season at the NCAA Midwest Regional on Saturday (Nov. 9) morning from the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course on the campus of UW-Parkside. Both teams bettered their places from 2012 as the men came in 12th and the women were 18th.
"We had a lot of runners with some really outstanding results," Tech cross country coach Joe Haggenmiller said. "I'm proud of how the team did even though the results aren't anything amazing. We have a very deep region and had numerous runners with personal best times."
Jani Lane earned all-region with a 21st place finish in the men's 10-kilometer race. He crossed the line in 32:13
"Jani had an awesome day being all-region," Haggenmiller said. "It's been a few years since we've had an all-region runner and he deserved it with they way he prepared himself."
Kyle Hanson was 47th with a time of 32:49 and Jason Saliga crossed in 33:20 in 65th.
"I'm proud of the race Kyle and Jason ran today as well," added Haggenmiller. "Jason was the eighth freshman to finish today and that bodes well for our future."
Bradon Kampstra (34:05) and Sean Pengelly (34:06) ran together in spots 101 and 102 and Daniel Kulas rounded out Tech runners in the men's race.
Deedra Irwin paced the women's team in 41st place. She finished the 6K course in 22:48. Sarah Daniels was 61st and finished 16 seconds back of Irwin in 23:04.
"I was really impressed with Deedra today," said Haggenmiller. "She had a personal best by a significant amount on a pretty tough course. Sarah also had a new personal best for 6K."
Marissa Yovetich (23:59) was 119th with Cassandra Bobart one second and three spots back. 24:00. Rachel Mason (24:15) rounded out the top five for Tech.
Carolyn Lucca (24:32) and Alice Flanders (25:07) also ran for the Black and Gold.
"Both teams are still quite young," Hagenmiller said. "We'll be losing Sarah and Marissa from the women's team but the rest should be back. On the guy's side, everyone should be back so that's pretty exciting."
Grand Valley State won both the men's and women's regional titles.
