Byrd Leads Track and Field at GINA Relays

HILLSDALE, Mich. - Emily Byrd set an NCAA provisional mark in her first 10,000 meter event of the season and the Huskies competed well at the 54th annual GINA Relays, hosted by Hillsdale College from Thursday to Saturday in men's and women's outdoor track and field. Byrd crossed the line in sixth place with a time of 35:48.51. The Huskies also set 17 individual personal bests at Ken Herrick Track.

Robbie Watling and Ben Holland also ran strong 10,000 meter races for Tech. Watling posted a new personal best time of 31:24.72 Thursday with Holland right behind at 31:41.79.

"Emily, our women's All-American had a slow start to her season, but in her first opportunity to run the 10K today, her best event, she knocked it out of the park and easily hit the provisional qualifying mark," said head coach Kristina Owen. "She is currently 19th on the provisional list but with a reduced NCAA field size, she will likely need to drop 15 seconds or so to punch her ticker. I'm looking forward to her getting another chance at the GLIAC Championships. Robbie and Ben ran great 10K's on the men's side in a strong open field. They controlled the race from the gun, switching off the lead every lap and taking turns setting the pace. It was fun seeing them work together, especially in Ben's first 10K race. Robbie found another gear to the finish and I was happy to see both of them set new personal bests."

Sam Furhman placed second in Javelin (51.36 meters) while Toby Bonner took fourth with a new personal record equalling 45.62 meters. Noah Koball set new best marks in both shot put and discus throw. He took second in the former and fourth in the latter in a solid weekend.

On the track, Andrew Lewis smashed the 400 meter hurdles and easily won his section to place 6th overall. "Andrew looked super smooth and clean over the hurdles, and I am excited to see how he does against the GLIAC competition at the Championships," Owen said.

The Huskies have competed in five outdoor meets (four full-team) this spring with three remaining on the schedule. Next is a trip to Allendale, Michigan for the Grand Valley Invitational beginning Friday, April 30. The most important event on the calendar is the GLIAC Outdoor Championships May 5 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, hosted by Davenport.
