Badgers win Saturday at MacInnes Student Ice Arena

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Wisconsin Badgers defeated Michigan Tech 5-2 on Saturday (Oct. 21) at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The Huskies struck first but surrendered four straight goals. Logan Pietila and Tyrone Bronte found the back of the net for the Black and Gold.
"We didn't have the jump and spark that we did on Friday," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "Wisconsin is a really good team. They play well with the puck and can play with speed.
"We're a young team that is looking for growth. We have to come to the rink for practice with the mindset that we need to continue to learn and get better and play for each other."
Logan Pietila opened scoring with 32 seconds left in the first period with a power play goal from Matthew Campbell and Kyle Kukkonen. He was trying to give a centering pass to Arvid Caderoth but the puck deflected off a skate and into the net. It was Logan's third of the season and the 35th of his career.
Mathieu De St. Phalle tied the game with a power-play goal from Ben Dexheimer and David Silye on a delayed penalty 8:02 into the second.
Joe Palodichuk gave the visitors a 2-1 lead at 12:50 of the second with assists to Simon Tassy and Christian Fitzgerald.
Former Husky Carson Bantle scored a power-play goal 28 seconds into the third period for a two-goal Wisconsin lead. Ben Dexheimer and Mathieu De St. Phalle assisted.
Sawyer Scholl scored the fourth goal for the Badgers from Simon Tassy 47 seconds later.
The Huskies settled into the third period and managed 10 shots on goal. Chase Pietila took a blast at the 7:34 mark that Tyrone Bronte tipped in for his first of the season and the ninth of his career. Max Koskipirtti added the second assist.
With 3:06 left and trailing by two, the Huskies went on the power play and pulled goaltender Blake Pietila for a 6-on-4 advantage. Wisconsin won the faceoff and Mike Vorlicky scored an empty net goal from his defensive zone for a 5-3 final.
Wisconsin led in shots 39-19 on the night. Blake Pietila had 34 saves and Kyle McClellan made 17 saves.
Tech continues non-conference play with a trip to upstate New York. The Huskies play at St. Lawrence on Friday, October 27 and Clarkson on Saturday, October 28.
