HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech men's basketball team returns to conference play on the road against Grand Valley State Thursday and Davenport Saturday.

About the Lakers

Grand Valley State welcomes Michigan Tech with an overall record of 4-7 with a 1-0 record in GLIAC play. Head coach Cornell Mann returned for his second season at the helm as the Lakers were tabbed to finish third in the conference in the preseason poll.

Grand Valley State is on a three-game losing skid despite averaging over 14 offensive rebounds per outing–a feat that ranks 11th nationally.

Marius Grazulis leads the Lakers, averaging a near double-double with 12.4 points and 9.4 rebounds. Three other Lakers are averaging double-figure scoring: Britain Harris (12.3), Trevon Gunter (10.8) and William Dunn (10.5).

Grazulis averages 4.5 offensive rebounds a game, ranking third in the country and has posted four double-double's through 11 games. 

About the Panthers

Davenport opened the New Year with a feel good win over East-West 113-63 on Tuesday, to bring its overall record to 4-6 with an 0-1 record in league play. In the win, the Panthers set new season-highs in points, rebounds, assists and steals.

Davenport averages 78.4 points per outing, with four players averaging eight or more points. Marcedus Leech Jr. leads the way with 18.4 points and averages 3.1 3-pointers a game. Myles Belyeu averages 11.2 points and a team-leading 5.5 rebounds and three assists per outing. James Felton chips in 8.5 points and 5.1 rebounds for the Panthers

Leech Jr. is a threat from beyond the arc, shooting 44.4 percent from long range this season.

The Panthers also get to the free-throw line almost 20 times a game, which ranks second in the league.

About the Huskies 

Michigan Tech concluded the 2023 calendar year on a two-game win streak for an overall record of 4-7 and 1-1 in the loop.

The Huskies knocked off its first ranked opponent of the season on Dec. 19, besting No. 24 ranked Winona State 73-71 thanks to multiple trips to the free-throw line down the stretch by sophomore guard Marcus Tomashek.

Michigan Tech backed that up with a win against Algoma (85-48) on Dec. 30 to conclude the nonconference slate. In the win, MTU saw 28 combined points from Brad Simonsen (13), Drew Barrie (9) and Peyton LaCombe (6).

Simonsen's performance was a season-high while shooting 5-of-7 from the field and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.

Tomashek continues to lead the Huskies offensively, with 24.9 points per game, which ranks third in the country. He also ranks 8th nationally with 274 points and averages 3.36 3-pointers per game, placing him 12th in Division II. He has also made 63 free-throws on 87.5 percent from the charity stripe, which is tops in the GLIAC.

The Huskies average over 15 free-throw makes a game while shooting a league-high 77 percent as a team while scoring 74.7 points per outing.

Pete Calcaterra ranks fifth in the conference with a team-leading 6.6 rebounds per game to go with 8.9 points.

Dan Gherezgher has started the last three contests and joins Tomashek in double-figure scoring with 10.6 points in 23 minutes a night.
