HOUGHTON, Mich. – Michigan Tech football takes to the road once again, traveling to Upper Iowa on Saturday, Sep. 23, at the Harms-Eischeid Stadium, slated for a 2 p.m. kickoff.

This marks the first meeting for the two teams.

About the Peacocks

Upper Iowa is in its first year as a member of the GLVC and has already won more games this season than it did in the 2022 campaign, with a ledger of 2-1.

Most recently, the Peacocks bested Missouri S&T 38-26 for their second-straight home victory. The win saw two Peacocks earn weekly honors, with Marcus Orr earning GLVC Offensive Player of the Week honors while Thomas Forte picked up Special Teams Player of the Week accolades.

Orr, the quarterback for Upper Iowa, completed 21-for-31 passes for 234 yards and a career-high five touchdowns. The Peacocks saw most of their success come through the air, although they also rushed 34 times for 80 yards. RJ Wells averaged 5.1 yards with a long of 15 yards on 13 carries.

Forte, a kicker for the Peacocks, went 5-5 on PATs, while connecting on the lone field goal from 47-yards.

Four of Orr's touchdown passes came in the second quarter, to flip the score 28-13 in favor of the Peacocks. Upper Iowa saw six receivers with at least three receptions apiece, with Mante Morrow, Jayden Mitchell, Eddie Burgess and Chandler George all accounting for touchdowns.

Defensively, the Peacocks grabbed three interceptions, with John Butsch accounting for a team-leading nine tackles to go with an interception he returned for 16 yards.

Upper Iowa was tabbed to finish seventh in the GLVC Preseason Poll, with head coach Jason Hoskins entering his fourth season at the helm of the Peacocks.

About the Huskies

Michigan Tech travels to Fayette, Iowa, with a record of 2-0, coming off a 28-20 victory against Division III foe Wisconsin-Platteville.

In the win over the Pioneers, the Huskies saw 288 yards of offense come from quarterback Alex Fries, connecting on a touchdown pass to Ethan Champney in the opening drive and later earning a touchdown with his legs. Champney led the team once again with 143 yards on 11 receptions. Wide receiver Darius Willis had 10 receptions, producing 123 yards for the Huskies.

Champney currently ranks third in the country in receiving yards per game, averaging 145.5 through the first two contests of the season.

On the ground, Will Marano had 20 carries for 59 yards, while Kolby Hindenach had seven carries and a touchdown.

The Huskies' defense played a vital role in the victory against Wis.-Platteville, highlighted by Sam Ahern, who accounted for two interceptions on the day. He now ranks first in the nation with 1.5 interceptions per game.

Additionally, Marc Sippel led the Black & Gold with 14 total tackles and the game-concluding interception with 1:05 to go in the 4th quarter.

Punter Benden Lach had eight punts on the day, averaging 47.4 yards per punt and four inside the 20-yard line. His efforts awarded him his first GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week honor. 

He also ranks second in the nation in punting average (48.6).

One Last Thing

Alex Fries leads the conference with 273 passing yards per game through two games, nationally, he ranks 23rd in the category.
