Gelety hired as Assistant Director of Esports

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Michigan Tech Esports Director Katelyn Roose has hired Chris Gelety as Assistant Director. Gelety began his duties in January 2022.

"Chris has the expertise, devotion, and priorities that we need to continue to grow as a program," Roose said. "His emphasis on maintaining academic success while pursuing personal growth and overall well-being is very important. Chris and I work very well together and I look forward to learning from him. From Day 1, Chris' priority has been bringing in the right student-athletes into our program."

"I'm excited at the opportunity to dedicate my undivided attention into building something great," Gelety said. "To find ways that I can elevate what our talented esports athletes do is what gets me up each and every day. Tech is something special, and it's an honor to play a part here.

"I am also looking forward to becoming better acquainted with hockey and spending many afternoons at Mount Ripley."

Gelety is responsible for recruiting future Huskies, managing social media and broadcast teams, and fostering partnerships with the program. He also coaches the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CSGO) team.

Gelety came to Tech from Davenport University where he was an assistant coach with the esports program since July 2019. In his role with the Panthers he helped evaluate players, assemble rosters, design practice plans, monitor and maintain equipment, recruit players, build scouting networks, resolve conflicts and motivate players in gameplay and academics, and assist in building the program's organizational structure and management.

The Panthers won the Fall 2021 National Association of Collegiate Esports Starleague Challenger CSGO and placed second in NACE Starleague Varsity CSGO in the fall.

Gelety was the Executive Director of the Esports Club Association of Michigan State University from February 2017-July 2019. He coached players, managed coaches, developed clubs, founded overarching club structure, created and guided social media and traditional media partnerships, developed brand partnerships, hosted and developed events, live-streamed broadcast production, and mentored a team of student leaders.

Gelety holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Northern Arizona University and a Juris Doctor from Michigan State University.
