PREVIEW: Division II Midwest Cross Country Regional

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Michigan Tech men's and women's cross country is set to compete in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Cross Country Championships Saturday, November 6 at Angel Mounds State Historic Site in Evansville, Indiana. The women's 6K starts at 11:30 a.m. (Eastern) followed by the men's 10K at 12:45 p.m.

  • The Husky men finished second at the GLIAC Championships on Saturday, October 23 and were ranked No. 6 in the region and No. 25 in the nation in the latest USTFCAAA Division II poll. Tech women's cross country placed fourth at the GLIAC Championships hosted by Saginaw Valley State.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Fighting through extremely wet and soggy course conditions, Clayton Sayen cracked the top-10 for the fourth time this season with a fourth place 8K time of 25:04.1 (5:02 pace). Sayen won the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis back on September 24. Sam Lange crossed 13th in 25:57.8, followed by teammates Luke Moore (21st - 26:31.7), Nick Niemi (23rd - 26:36.2), and Nick McKenzie (27th - 26:36.2).
  • Michelle Bollini again led the Husky women with an 11th place 6K time of 23:04.0. Sam Kurkowski came in 19th (23:31.7). Anabel Needham was 26th (23:51.7), followed by Chloe Strach (35th - 24:20.2), and Jenna Brewer (20:17.4).

LAST TIME AT THE REGIONAL

  • For the first time in Michigan Tech cross country history, the men's and women's teams qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships with second place team finishes in the 2019 Midwest Regional Championships.
  • The women's team placed five runners inside the top 40 to punch their ticket to Sacramento, including current Husky Sam Kurkowski (40th).
  • The men' squad was assisted by Braden Reichl (6th) and Clayton Sayen (13th). 
  • This year's National Championships are hosted at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento, California on Saturday, November 23.
