Huskies sweep NMU for second time this season

MARQUETTE, Mich. – No. 20 Michigan Tech picked up its 18th win of the season with a 3-0 sweep at Northern Michigan on Saturday (Oct. 30). The Huskies won 25-12, 25-17, and 25-16 at Vandament Arena to improve to 18-5 overall and 10-1 in the GLIAC.

"We played well and we're certainly very happy to come in and pick up a key win here on the road," Tech coach Matt Jennings said. "It's always a battle when these teams face-off, and I'm very pleased that we came out on top"

Tech forced the Wildcats into 10 attacking errors in the first set while hitting .435. Olivia Ghormley had six kills in the first set. Tied at nine, the Huskies took a 1-0 lead after closing out the set with a 14-3 run

The Huskies hit .562 in the second. They used a 6-0 run to take an 11-9 lead and slowly built an eight-point lead. Jillian Kuizenga had a kill for a 23-16 advantage, and Laura De Marchi made it 2-0 Huskies after a kill and 25-17 win. Kuizenga and Anna Jonynas each registered six kills.

Tech hopped out to a 7-0 lead in the third and never looked back. Late kills by Jonynas and Kaycee Meiners gave the Huskies their second sweep of NMU this season with a 25-16 win.

Jonynas finished with a match-high 12 kills while Ghormley added 10. Kuizenga (8) and Morgan Radtke (7) also had more than six kills. De Marchi set the attack with 33 assists while adding eight digs. Carissa Beyer led with a match-high 10 digs.

Lizzy Stark led the Wildcats with nine kills. Lauren Van Remortel had 22 assists and Caylie Barlage tallied eight digs. NMU is 9-13 overall and 4-7 in the GLIAC.

The Huskies finally return home after its seven-game road trip where they went 6-1. Tech hosts Northwood Friday at 5 p.m. and Lake Superior State Saturday at 2 p.m. on Senior Day. MacAulay Petersen, Laura De Marchi, Olivia Ghormley, Anna Jonynas, and Megan Utlak will be recognized.
