Volleyball wins 3-1 Friday at LSSU

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The No. 22-ranked Michigan Tech volleyball team defeated Lake Superior State 3-1 Friday (Nov. 15) at Bud Cooper Gymnasium. The Huskies won 25-16, 25-20, 23-25, and 25-19 for their 18th straight win over the Lakers.

Tech improved to 21-5 overall and 13-2 in the GLIAC will now play for a share of the GLIAC Regular Season Title Saturday at Saginaw Valley State.

There were seven early lead changes in the first set before the Huskies took control with a 6-1 run and then closed it out, scoring eight of the final 12 points. Olivia Ghormley, MacAulay Petersen, and Morgan Radtke all had three kills in the opening set.

Tech cruised to a 21-11 lead in the second before the Lakers started to get back into it with a 9-3 run which included four points at Tech's setpoint. Anna Jonynas finally put the Black and Gold up 2-0 with a kill and a 25-20 win.

LSSU (8-18, 2-13 GLIAC) won a back and forth third set that had seven ties. The Lakers survived a late rally by the Huskies with a kill by Amanda Reid and an attacking error by Tech for a 25-23 win.

The Huskies scored five straight points early to build a 9-4 cushion in the fourth and then forced LSSU into eight attacking errors and closed out the match 25-19.

Briana Sharkey set a balanced offensive attack with 35 assists while adding 18 digs and six kills. Morgan Radtke had six kills and a season-high five blocks

"Bri was really good in this one," Tech coach Matt Jennings said. "I'm very proud of the way she stepped up and led us out there. Morgan was excellent. She was sharp on offense and was our standout blocker."

Ghormley had 12 kills and 15 digs. Petersen finished with 11 kills and seven blocks. Anna Jonynas (9 kills) and Rachel Ping (5 kills) also had at least five kills. Megan Utlak added 17 digs.
