Michigan Tech Takes On Davenport in GLIAC Tournament Semifinal

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The 2018 season for the Michigan Tech volleyball team continues this Friday (Nov. 9) when they take on Davenport in the Semifinal of the 2018 GLIAC Volleyball Tournament on the campus of Ferris State University.

The Huskies, seeded second in the Tournament with a 23-5 overall record and a mark of 14-2 in the GLIAC, advanced to the Semifinal after sweeping Grand Valley State 3-0 at home in the Quarterfinal. Sophomore Olivia Ghormley led all players with 17 kills, while sophomore Anna Jonynas led with 19 digs, and freshman Janie Grindland totaled six block assists.

Davenport, seeded sixth with an overall record of 16-13 overall and a record of 9-7 against conference opponents, upset third-seed Ashland 3-2 in the Quarterfinal for their first victory in the GLIAC Tournament in program history. The teams previously met on September 15 inside the SDC Gym, with the Huskies pulling out a 3-1 win over the Panthers to give head coach Matt Jennings his 100th win as coach of the Huskies.

Guiding Davenport's offense in Friday's match will be Jenn Kay Vander Meer and Ashley VanderHorst, who tie for the team lead with 280 kills each. Hayley Kreigeris another dangerous player for the Panthers with 270 kills, while Sydney Tracer is their primary setter with 600 assists. Defensively, Kasey Stehouwer leads the team with 476 digs, while VanderHorst is a force at the net with 143 total blocks.

A win on Friday will place Michigan Tech in their second consecutive GLIAC Tournament Final, where they will face either top-seed Ferris State or fourth-seed Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (Nov. 10). Michigan Tech played each team twice this season, with the Huskies winning both matches against the Cardinals and losing twice to the Bulldogs.
