Volleyball Announces Team Awards; Heinonen Named MVP

The Michigan Tech volleyball team announced its 2017 team award recipients and its new leadership for the 2018 season. Elle Heinonen was honored as the team MVP and clinched the Digger Award. Courtney Kurkie received the Harold Meese Sportsmanship Award, Kristine Fink was named Most Improved, Stephanie Dietrich earned the Scholastic Achievement Award, and Mariah Sherman and MacAulay Petersen were appointed to 2018 team captains.

Fall Sport Student-Athletes Honored by GLIAC for Academics

A total of 97 Michigan Tech student-athletes earned recognition from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for academics as the league announced its Fall Academic Excellence Awards and All-Academics Teams.

Michigan Tech volleyball coach Matt Jennings announced that four players – Briana Sharkey (Lodi, Wis.), Janie Grindland (Woodbury, Minn.), Grace Novotny (Wauwatosa, Wis.) and Maggie Petersen (Mattawan, Mich.) – have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Huskies for the 2018 season.

The Michigan Tech Huskies made their ninth all-time appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament Thursday as the No. 8 seed in the Midwest Region. The Huskies fell to the top-seeded Lewis Flyers 3-1 inside the Neil Carey Arena. Tech won set three 25-21 but fell 25-14 and 25-16 in the first two frames and 25-20 in the fourth.

The volleyball team will make its ninth all-time appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament as the Huskies are the No. 8 seed in the Midwest Region. The Huskies will play No. 1 seeded Lewis in the quarterfinal at Lewis. Match time is set for 8:30 p.m. (Eastern) Thursday at Neil Carey Arena.

The Michigan Tech volleyball team will make its ninth all-time appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament as the Huskies were named a No. 8 seed in the Midwest Region. The Huskies will play the No. 1 seeded Lewis in the first round. Top seeded Lewis is also deemed as the regional host for all of the Midwest qualifiers.

The Michigan Tech volleyball team fell 3-0 to Ferris State in the 2017 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Championship match Sunday (Nov. 19) inside FSU's Ewigleben Sports Arena. Senior middle blocker Lauren Emmert and sophomore outside hitter MacAulay Petersen were named to All-Tournament Team.

The Michigan Tech Huskies won a four-setter tournament semifinal match against the Northern Michigan Wildcats in the Ewigleben Sports Arena to advance to the GLIAC Championship game Sunday Nov. 19. The Huskies won three sets, dropping one to NMU (25-22, 25-16, 25-20, 25-21).

Michigan Tech’s head coach Matt Jennings was named GLIAC Volleyball Coach of the Year, Laura DeMarchi was named Freshman of the Year, Setter of the Year and was named to the All-GLIAC First Team along with teammate Mariah Sherman. MacAulay Petersen was named to the All-GLIAC Second Team and Elle Heinonen was Honorable Mention.

The Michigan Tech Huskies swept the Tiffin Dragons (25-22, 25-18, 25-16) in the quarterfinal round of the 2017 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Wednesday (Nov. 15) at the SDC Gym. The third-seeded Huskies now advance to the GLIAC Semifinals at top-seed Ferris State Saturday (Nov. 18) and will face No. 2 seed Northern Michigan for the third time this season.

The Michigan Tech volleyball team advanced to the 2017 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament and will host a quarterfinal round match at 6 p.m. on Wednesday (Nov. 15) at the SDC Gym. The No. 3 seeded Huskies will make their 17th GLIAC Tournament appearance in program history against the No. 6 seeded Tiffin Dragons. The winner will advance to the GLIAC Semifinals on Saturday at the highest remaining seed's home court with the championship game on Sunday.
