Volleyball Sweeps Northwood Friday

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech volleyball team defeated Northwood Friday (Nov. 4) to pick up its seventh 3-0 sweep of the season and improve to 14-13 overall and 9-5 in the GLIAC. The Huskies won 25-13, 25-23, and 25-23.
"We're happy with the three-set win," Tech coach Matt Jennings said. "It's a good win against a dangerous team that beat Ferris earlier this year."
The Huskies dominated the first set, jumping out to a 13-7 lead and closing with seven of the final nine points.
"We were aggressive early and crisp with our serves," added Jennings. "We had a good first set and maybe slowed down a bit in the second but toughed it out, and that's a sign of a good team."
Northwood (13-12, 4-10 GLIAC) led 16-13 in the middle frame, before the Huskies scored seven straight on the serve of Aubrey Ficek. MacAulay Petersen had three kills in the run. Tech got to set point after another Petersen kill and a Northwood serving error made it 2-0.
The visitors again jumped out to a lead in the third set. Down 16-10, the Huskies scored six of the next seven to get back into it. Tied at 23, Ficek gave the Black and Gold the sweep with back-to-back kills.
Ficek and Petersen both had 10 kills to lead the offense while Ficek also added 10 digs. Rachel Pohlod had 27 assists and 11 digs, while Elle Heinonen (15) also hit double digit digs.
"MacAulay has excelled as a freshman all year," said Jennings. "She was aggressive today and really got behind one. That was the hardest she's hit one all year."
The Huskies added seven aces with four coming off the hand of Courtney Kurkie.
"Our serving has been phenomenal all year," Jennings said. "Seventeen aces in the last three matches is excellent."
Tech wraps up the three-match week Saturday (Nov. 5) against Hillsdale. First serve is set for 3 p.m. at the SDC Gym. The Chargers lost 3-0 at Northern Michigan Friday.
