Volleyball Wins in Five Over Lake Erie

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech volleyball team played in its seventh five-set match of the season Friday, this time coming out victorious over Lake Erie at the SDC Gym. The Huskies improved to 10-12 overall and 5-4 in the GLIAC and host Ohio Dominican Saturday.
The Huskies had their backs against the walls after the first two sets, falling 25-23 and 26-24. The Storm was clutch down the stretch in both sets, winning five of the final six points in each frame.
The Huskies responded, taking a commanding 12-4 lead in the third and going on to win 25-13. Tech slowly built a lead in the fourth and scored eight of the final 11 to knot it up.
"We didn't play that clean in the later stages of the first two sets," Tech coach Matt Jennings said. "I challenged the team at the break to clean it up. We felt like we gave a set away and the team responded with better ball control and serves."
In the fifth, Rachel Pohlod served the Huskies to a 4-0 lead, and four kills by MacAulay Petersen gave the home team the win.
Aubrey Ficek led the Huskies with 27 kills, while Peterson finished with a career high 22. The team tied a season-high with 76 kills. Pohlod reset her career highs in assists (64) and digs (23).
Tech dug up a season-high 111 digs, 28 more than the previous mark. Elle Heinonen (38) and Courtney Kurkie (18) also added new career highs for digs while Halie Hart (10) and Ficek (13) also hit double figures on defense.
"Macaulay and Aubrey were dominant in the fourth set, and Rachel did a good job spreading the ball around all night," added Jennings.
The Huskies host the Panthers at 3 p.m. ODU defeated Northern Michigan 3-2 on Friday.
"Ohio Dominican is a team that can beat anyone," Jennings said. "We need to be ready, and I expect another hard fought match."
