Volleyball Takes Down Walsh in Four Friday

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Michigan Tech volleyball team got back in the win column with a 3-1 victory over Walsh on Friday (Oct. 7). The Huskies won the first two sets before dropping the third in extra points. They closed out the match in the fourth 25-20 to move to 7-9 overall and 4-4 in the GLIAC.

"I'm happy with the road win and to get us back to five hundred in the conference," Tech coach Matt Jennings said. "Our offense and serving were key tonight, while our defense stepped up with some huge points."

The Huskies jumped out to quick leads in the first two sets, winning 25-14 and 25-18. The Cavaliers found their stride late in the third, scoring the final three points to win 28-26. Tech had to come back in the fourth and scored the final six points to earn the victory

Aubrey Ficek had a match-high 19 kills to lead the offense. She also added 11 digs. Mariah Sherman (9), MacAulay Petersen (8), and Stephanie Dietrich (8) also contributed to a balanced attack. Rachel Pohlod set the offense with 54 assists and added 15 digs.

Halie Hart had her sixth 20-dig match with 22 on defense. Elle Heinonen was also in double figures with 16 digs.

"Ficek was our workhorse tonight," added Jennings. "Not only with the volume of kills, but with her clutch play overall. Rachel ran the offense well, and Elle and Halie led the backcourt in solid form."

The Huskies are back in action Saturday (Oct. 8) for a pair of matches in West Virginia. They play Fairmont State at 3 p.m. and defending NCAA Division II National Champions Wheeling Jesuit at 5 p.m.
