Huskies come up short after positive start

IRVINE, Calif. - Michigan Tech women's tennis suffered a 4-1 loss to Concordia Irvine Monday afternoon at CUI Tennis Courts. The Huskies won two sets in doubles to take the team doubles point but came up empty in singles to fall to 0-3 this spring.

"The score definitely didn't reflect on how well we competed today," said head coach Kristin Yep. "We were right in there against a difficult opponent. Playing shorthanded and through injuries was a challenge but we pushed as hard as we could, given difficult circumstances."

Chiara Heinz teamed with Neva Manas at No. 2 doubles to defeat Kimia Rahmani (CUI) and Alicia Da Re (CUI) 6-4. Ivona Gorgioski and Marina Fernandez were also successful at No. 3 doubles with a 6-2 set over Maya Arksey (CUI) and Grace Gorges (CUI).

The Eagles quickly made up the deficit in singles. Maya Arksey (CUI) took out Lauren Opalewski (MTU) in straight sets at No. 2, 6-4, 6-1 and Neva Manas fell 6-4, 6-1 to Alyssa Zayat at No. 3. Marina Fernandez pushed Kimia Rahmani (CUI) to three sets at No. 4 singles but came up just short 6-1, 6-4, 3-6.

Chiara Heinz (No. 5 singles) and Nicole Ballach (No. 1 singles) did not finish (match decided).

The Huskies (0-3) continue their California road trip on Tuesday when they take on Biola University at 4:30 p.m.
