Michigan Tech takes fifth place in GLIAC Tournament

MIDLAND, Mich. - Michigan Tech prevailed 4-1 over Purdue Northwest in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference fifth place match Sunday at Great Midland Tennis Center. With the victory, the Huskies wrap up the 2021 spring season 6-4 in the GLIAC and 6-9 overall. After falling in the first round of the conference tournament Friday, Tech bounced back for wins over Saginaw Valley State and PNW to end on a winning note.

The Huskies got off to a strong start in doubles with victories at No. 1 and No. 2. Dominika Bobik and Lauren Opalewski teamed to defeat Sienna Lopez and Lena Van Bergen 6-4. Ivona Gorgioski and Neva Manas got past Patricia Dizon and Nicole Uzcategui 6-2. Purdue Norwest snagged No. 3 doubles 6-3. 

In singles, Gorgioski won by retirement in the first set against Lopez. Opalewski took a straight sets win at No. 3 over Dizon 6-2, 7-5 while Marina Fernandez downed Carolina Yepez at No. 5, 6-3, 6-2. Senior Mirna Golac closed out her final match as a Husky at No. 6 in a second set tiebreaker over Julia Yanes-Barrera 6-1, 7-6. Tech won three of the last four matches and moved to an even 5-5 record away from Houghton.

"It was very nice to end the season with a win," said head coach Kristin Yep. "It has been a really tough year and so finishing where we did was good. It shows where we can work to move forward and get better for next year."

The Huskies played nine matches on the road before finally returning to host three matches at Gates Tennis Center to close the regular season. Michigan Tech has eight GLIAC Tournament appearances and has finished as high as second place in program history.
