Michigan Tech defeats Saginaw Valley State 4-0

MIDLAND, Mich. - Rebounding quickly from defeat in the first round of the GLIAC tournament, No. 5 seed Michigan Tech collected a 4-0 victory over No. 8 seed Saginaw Valley State in women's tennis Saturday afternoon in consolation at the Greater Midland Tennis Center. The Huskies will play for fifth place Sunday at 1 p.m. against Purdue Northwest in the final match of the 2021 season.

Tech seized the team doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Dominika Bobik and Lauren Opalewski teamed to beat Chelsea Dzenga and Sara Neves 6-2. Mirna Golac and Marina Fernandez also downed Adija Young and Gyselle Gutierrez 6-3. 

Fernandez carried momentum into singles for Tech. At No. 5, Fernandez earned a straight set win over Nicole Johnson 6-3, 6-3 to move to 8-6 in singles this spring. The Huskies benefitted from a pair of retirements to clinch the match. No. 3 singles ended with 6-1, 2-0 ret. for Opalewski over Dzenga. Neva Manas defeated Gyselle Gutierrez 6-2 ret.

"I felt we went out and took care of business," said head coach Kristin Yep. "With alot of the pressure off from yesterday, we competed against Saginaw Valley State hard and were able to play free."
