Four Huskies Earn GLIAC All-Conference Honors
MIDLAND, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women's tennis team had four players earn Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Conference Honors, announced Friday night by the conference office. Junior Ivona Gorgioski, sophomore Jessica Brown, and freshman Dominika Bobik were all named to the first team while freshman Lauren Opalewski was an Honorable Mention selection. In addition to her spot on the first team, Bobik was named the GLIAC Freshman of the Year.
Bobik, who hails from Wroclaw, Poland, powers the Huskies with 10 singles wins and 14 victories in doubles competition as a freshman at Tech. Bobik is undefeated in conference singles matches, boasting a 9-0 record going into the GLIAC tournament this weekend. She has played the majority of her contests in the No. 3 spot where she is 6-0, but has two wins in the No.1 position and one victory in No.2 singles. Bobik is 8-1 in conference doubles, with all her matches taking place in the number two spot.
Gorgioski is from Prilep Macedonia and this year earned All-GLIAC First Team honors for the third consecutive season. Gorgioski was the GLIAC Freshman of the Year as well in 2017-18 and this season is 6-4 in singles matches overall going into the GLIAC Tournament. All seven of her GLIAC singles matches (4-3) have been played in the No.1 spot as has her doubles contests where she along with Brown have teamed up to go 5-4.
Brown, who is from Midland, Michigan, has now earned back-to-back First Team All-GLIAC accolades after logging a 6-3 singles record and 5-4 doubles record heading into the conference tournament this weekend. Brown has played the majority of her singles matches in the No.2 spot in the lineup and has competed with Gorgioski in No.1 doubles in each of the conference contests. Brown led Tech last season with 15 singles wins and 12 doubles victories.
Opalewski is from Oxford, Michigan and is 8-3 overall in singles with a 6-2 record against GLIAC competition. She has played in the No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 spots this year with six of her contests taking place in the No. 5 spot where she went 4-2. She logged wins in her lone appearances in the No. 3 and No. 4 positions in the lineup. In doubles, Opalewski along with Bobik have anchored the No.2 spot in doubles for the Huskies this season, with the pair combining to go 8-1 against GLIAC competition.
The Huskies are the No. 3 seed in the GLIAC Tournament and face Saginaw Valley State University in the quarterfinals Friday night in Midland, Michigan. Tech owns both an overall and GLIAC record of 7-2 going into the tournament.
