Huskies Suffer 6-1 Loss at Wayne State

DETROIT, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women's tennis team suffered a tough 6-1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss at Wayne State Sunday. The Huskies opened the weekend with a 7-0 victory at Ashland Saturday and started the year at 2-0 before Sunday's contest.

"It was a tough loss for us today in a match that we had a good chance to come out of with a win," Michigan Tech Head Coach Kevin Kalinec said. "Our players gave great effort once again today and I thought Dominika [Bobik] played really well for us in doubles and singles. Weather was a factor in the match which caused delays before moving to indoor courts to finish the match. We struggled a bit to get rolling again after the delay. Wayne State is a solid team and credit to them for playing a strong match. We'll get back to work this week and today's match will help make us better in the long run. We are excited to be at home next weekend to compete against a couple of very good teams in Northwood and Saginaw Valley State."

Michigan Tech (2-1, 2-1 GLIAC) earned a doubles win in the No. 2 spot in the lineup with freshman Dominika Bobik and freshman Lauren Opalewski teaming up to defeat Teodora Radu and Tanja Skalda. Bobik and Opalewski held on for the 7-5 win with some key shots down the stretch.

Unfortunately, Wayne State (4-0, 4-0 GLIAC) picked up wins in the other two doubles contests on Sunday. Laura Cazacu and Linda Liong recorded a 6-1 win over junior Ivona Gorgioski and sophomore Jessica Brown in No. 1 doubles while Khadija Da-Silva and Sabrina Laynes topped freshman Neva Manas and sophomore Samantha Johnson in a close 7-5 match in No. 3 doubles. The two doubles victories for the Warriors gave them a 1-0 lead in the overall match going into singles competition.

Bobik continues to play well and on Sunday logged a hard fought win over Da-Silva in No. 3 singles. Bobik posted a 6-4 victory in set one and then prevailed 7-6 in the second set to lock down her second singles win of the weekend. The Huskies nearly secured points in No. 2, No. 4, and No. 5 singles as well, but came up just short. Brown fell to Liong in a tough three set match 7-6, 1-6, 4-6 while Manas lost to Skalda in three 6-4, 2-6, 2-6. Opalewski went toe-to-toe with Rady but fell 6-4, 7-5. Cazacu picked up the win for Wayne State in No. 1 singles over Gorgioski and Sabrina Laynes earned the decision in No. 6 singles against sophomore Mirna Golac.

The Huskies will now get set for their home opener this Saturday against Northwood in the Gates Tennis Center at 10 a.m. eastern time. Tech will then play Saginaw Valley State next Sunday at home with a 10 a.m. first serve scheduled for that match as well.
