Huskies Complete ITA Regional Tournament

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women's tennis team closed out the ITA Midwest Regional Tournament hosted by Davenport University on Sunday. The three-day event featured multiple singles and doubles competition.

A SINGLES RESULTS
Junior Ivona Gorgioski picked up wins in her first two singles matches, defeating Willemien Coetzee of Davenport 6-2, 6-1 in the first match. Gorgioski then advanced to the round of 16 with a solid contest against Hannah Burth of the University of Missouri- St. Louis. Final set scores were 6-1, 6-0 in Friday's second match. Gorgioski then fell to Viktoriya Zheleva Saturday 6-1, 6-0.

Freshman Dominika Bobik won her first match Friday topping Vera Griva of Grand Valley State in a thrilling three set match 6-7 (3), 7-5, and 10-8. Unfortunately, in Friday's second match, Maria Solnyshkina of Indianapolis prevailed 6-4, 6-1 to advance.

Freshman Neva Manas lost her first match Friday to Anna Novikova Friday 6-0, 6-0, but bounced back nicely with a 6-3, 6-2 win in the consolation bracket over Miller of SVSU. Manas proceeded to upend Pereyra of Findlay 6-2, 6-2, to get to the round of eight before narrowly falling to Sredojevic in three sets 2-6, 6-4, 10-4.

B SINGLES RESULTS
Sophomore Mirna Golac picked up a win in the first round of B singles against Georgie Cupper 6-3, 6-1 before suffering a 7-5, 6-4 loss to Chloe Weihs in the next round.

Sophomore Samantha Johnson lost her first-round match against Olivia Hanover of Grand Valley State 6-1, 6-1, but like Manas, rebounded well in the consolation portion of the B singles bracket. She topped Malpass of Lake Superior State 6-4, 1-6, 10-4 to advance to the round of 16. Johnson then fell to Dowden 6-3, 6-0 on Saturday to end her tournament run.

Freshman Lauren Opalewski had a strong opening day on Friday with a pair of wins to punch her ticket to the round of 16. Opalewski recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win against Riley Gilman of Lake Superior State before defeating Taylor Lighty of Findlay 6-1, 6-3. Opalweski came up short in her next match on Saturday, dropping a hard fought 6-4, 6-4 decision to Valiaeve.

B DOUBLES RESULTS
In the B doubles portion of the tournament, the Huskies saw some success on Friday with two of their teams advancing. Johnson and Golac teamed up to defeat Gimbel and Kirov of Findlay 8-3. On the other half of the bracket, Bobik and Opalewski got past Nieto and Lighty of Findlay for an 8-4 decision in their favor. Johnson and Golac were unable to advance in their next match but Bobik and Opalewski generated another 8-1 win over Nelson and Coetzee of Davenport 8-1 followed by an 8-5 triumph against Matthews and Matthews of Hillsdale to reach the semifinals before being eliminated from the B doubles consolation bracket.

The Huskies will return to team play this weekend when they travel to Ashland University for a GLIAC match Saturday at 10 a.m. eastern time followed by a conference showdown at Wayne State Sunday at 10 a.m. Full results through Saturday's contest can be viewed at the link above.
