Huskies Power Past Purdue Northwest 6-1 Sunday
GRIFFITH, Ind. – The Michigan Tech women's tennis team capped another solid weekend with a 6-1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win at Purdue Northwest Sunday. The Huskies flew past Davenport on Saturday with an identical 6-1 score and have now won three of their last four matches, clinching a spot in the GLIAC tournament in a couple of weeks.
"I thought we played pretty well today against an improved Purdue Northwest team," Michigan Tech Head Coach Kevin Kalinec said. "We came out a little flat in doubles and they took us by surprise, but we regrouped and earned the doubles point which was key. We got things rolling from there and did what we needed to do to win the match. We'll get back to work at practice this week and focus on starting stronger when we face Lake Superior State at home on Saturday."
Michigan Tech (7-2, 6-2 GLIAC) once again set the tone for the rest of the contest by getting the crucial point in doubles Sunday. Two of the three contests were tightly contested with sophomore Ivona Gorgioski and freshman Jessica Brown edging out Lena van Bergen and Patricia Dizon of Purdue Northwest (3-7, 07 GLIAC) in the No. 1 spot. The final score went in the books as 7-6 with each side exchanging points from start to finish.
In No. 2 doubles, senior Vicky Quinde and freshman Samantha Johnson battled Pia Schmedding and Giulia Castiglioni of Purdue Northwest to a 6-4 victory. The Huskies then secured a win in No. 3 doubles as well en route to the sweep. Senior Allenca Rolim and freshman Mirna Golac cruised past the duo of Cynthia Basu-Chavez and Carolina Yepez by the final of 6-1. The three decisions in Tech's favor produced a 1-0 lead going into singles competition.
The Huskies were dominant in five of the six singles matches and nearly came up with the sweep. Gorgioski anchored the No. 1 singles spot in the lineup and posted a 6-2, 6-1 result in her favor over Lena van Bergen of Purdue Northwest to reach nine singles wins this season. Brown was impressive again in the No. 2 spot Sunday, powering her way to win No. 10 of the 2018 campaign. Brown recorded scores of 6-1, 6-1 against Giulia Castiglioni in Sunday's match.
Johnson joined Gorgioski with nine wins in 2018 thanks to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Schmedding in the No. 3 spot of Sunday's lineup. Quinde bolted past Dizon 6-2, 6-1 in No. 4 singles for her seventh win of 2018 and junior Anabella Neri matched Quinde at the seven-win mark thanks to a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Basu-Chavez Sunday in No. 6 singles.
The Huskies have limited opponents to one point or fewer in five matches this season and given up two points or less in six of nine total matches in 2018. Their combined wins in singles competition stands at 51 while adding 21 doubles victories.
Tech wraps up the GLIAC schedule Saturday in the Gates Tennis Center against Lake Superior State before competing in the GLIAC Tournament October 26-28. Saturday's first serve is slated for 10 a.m.
