MTU Soccer drops 1-0 at No. 11 Wildcats

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Michigan Tech Soccer team fell short of victory in the final GLIAC regular season game 1-0 to Northern Michigan at the NMU Soccer Field on Thursday afternoon.

This is the first loss for the Huskies in eight games and just the third of the season.

"It was a tough battle today against a very good NMU team," head coach Turk Ozturk said. "Congratulations to them on winning the regular season championship. I am very proud of the fight and spirit of our team. We went down early but never gave up and continued to fight until the very end. Although it's not the result that we wanted, we are prepared to let this one go and shift our focus to the GLIAC tournament."

The Wildcats (13-1-4, 9-1-4 GLIAC) found the back of the net three minutes into the contest, with Stephanie Trujillo netting the game-winner from the right side of the goalkeeper's box, finding the left corner of the net at the 3:05 mark. Hannah Kastamo earned an assist on Trujillo's goal.

Michigan Tech (8-3-7, 7-2-5 GLIAC) held a 14-11 shot advantage, along with a 7-6 nod in shots on goal. The Huskies also had a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks, despite it being a season-low.

The Huskies saw three shots on goal in the first 45 minutes in addition to the only two corner kicks of the game. However, Michigan Tech was unable to find offense off the set pieces. 

The second half showcased four shots on goal from each team, with Northern Michigan facing seven shots compared to Michigan Tech's six.

Gracie VanLangevelde made a big stop in the 77th minute to keep the Huskies in the game.

Minutes later, the Huskies had a set piece off a free kick in the 79th minute. However, the Wildcats goalkeeper wouldn't allow for any chaos in the box, making a jumping save.

Michigan Tech saw a shot on goal from six different Huskies while VanLangevelde made five saves.

The Huskies finished third in the GLIAC and will host the quarterfinals of the GLIAC tournament on Monday, welcoming Parkside at noon.
