Huskies defeat Northwood 1-0 Friday to start road trip

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer started the road trip on the right foot, defeating Northwood 1-0 on Friday (Oct. 15). The Huskies improved to 8-4 on the season and 5-3 in the GLIAC, good for third in the conference standings.

The lone tally in the contest came off the foot of Grace Shaw, the co-captain of the Black and Gold. In the 18th minute, Stephanie Yeager would intercept a Nortwood pass and find Jesse Jacobusse who chipped it in to Shaw. Grace Shaw would spin around the defender and beat the goalkeeper for the score. Jacobusse would be credited with the assist.

Shaw notched her 7th goal of the season, leading the Huskies and good for fourth in the conference. It was her 24th career goal.

"Getting one in the back of the net from Grace before the half was huge," Coach Turk Ozturk said.

After outshooting the Timberwolves in the first half, the Huskies survived more offensive pressure from Northwood in half number two. The Timberwolves out shot the Huskies 12-8 for the game. The teams each recorded five shots on goal. Grace Shaw was the lone Husky to get multiple shots on goal with two.

Gracie VanLangevelde got the nod in goal for the Black and Gold and came up big. She stopped all five shots she saw in the contest.

"Gracie made some key saves for us today," Ozturk said. "The back line helped hold down the fort and get the win. I am super proud of our effort today. Northwood is a hard-working team and has a lot of talent. We battled hard for these points."

The Huskies will continue their road trip on Sunday (Oct. 17) as they head to Davenport for an 11 a.m. kickoff. The Panthers are 2-9-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the GLIAC. They are coming off of a 3-1 victory at Northwood last weekend (Oct. 10).

Michigan Tech will wrap up their three game road trip on Friday (Oct. 22) when they head to #1 Grand Valley State. The Huskies will return home that Sunday (Oct. 24) to take on #9 Ferris State.
