Tech's Record  4-3-1 GLIAC
Parkside's Record 0-6-2 GLIAC

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Michigan Tech women's soccer will make-up last week's postponed Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Wisconsin-Parkside Friday, April 23 at 1 p.m. at Kearly Stadium. The Huskies (4-3-1) are coming off a 3-0 win against Purdue Northwest Sunday and are currently fourth in the 10-team conference standings. The GLIAC Tournament quarterfinals begin on Tuesday, April 27 with higher seeds hosting. The top-eight schools qualify for the postseason.

The Huskies are 2-1 at home this spring. Wisconsin-Parkside is still searching for its first win with an 0-6-2 overall record.

OFFENSIVE LEADER: Grace Shaw continues to lead the Huskies offensively with 12 points (third in the GLIAC), including four goals and four assists. The junior forward scored what eventually became the game winning goal Sunday with an athletic play in front of the left post. Shaw stopped a pass and quickly transferred the ball from right to left and slipped it past the goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead just shy of 10 minutes into the contest.

GOALKEEPING AND OTHER CONTRIBUTORS: The Huskies also received solid goalkeeping Sunday by Erika Gabriel, who made two saves for her third clean sheet of the season. Gabriel (Grandville, Michigan) has five starts and holds a 0.89 goals against average, good for fourth best in the GLIAC. Jesse Jacobusse tallied an assist Sunday and leads Michigan Tech with five goals (third in the GLIAC). Her last goal was April 9 in a 2-1 win over Northwood. In eight games, Jacobusse has already matched her 11-point total from 2019.

Other offensive contributors include Haley Ruiter (3-2-8 pts), Brooke Schauer (1-5-7 pts), Kiersen Korienek (1-0-2 pts), and Allison Thelen (1-0-2 pts). Tech has 15 goals (1.88 goals per game) and allowed nine goals against (1.08 goals against average).

THE SERIES: In 2019, the Huskies split the season series with Wisconsin-Parkside, with the Rangers winning 2-1 in Houghton and the Huskies winning 1-0 in Wisconsin. A win would give MTU a winning regular season record for the first time since 2018 (10-6-1), where they lost in the GLIAC quarterfinals to Ashland (1-0).

LEAGUE AT A GLANCE: The Huskies tied top-ranked Grand Valley State earlier this spring and the Lakers were handed their first loss against Ashland, which dropped GVSU one spot below Michigan Tech in the standings. No. 16 ranked Ferris State remains undefeated at 7-0-1. They are followed by Ashland (6-1-1), Northern Michigan (6-2-1), and Michigan Tech (4-3-1).

Caroline Halonen (NMU) leads the conference with nine goals and 19 points. Schauer (MTU) ranks No. 1 with five assists.

SCOUTING THE RANGERS: Despite playing seven one-goal games, Wisconsin-Parkside is still winless this spring. They have ties against Northwood and Purdue Northwest at home but have just eight goals with 17 surrendered. Sophomore forward Alexis Baker leads the team with five points (two goals, one assist) and freshman midfielder/forward Alexis Bolger has a team high 18 shot attempts. Izzy Guyer (seven games, six starts) handles the bulk of the goalkeeping and holds a 2.15 goals against average and .763 save percentage with 45 saves and 14 goals allowed.

In 2019, the Rangers finished 7-11-1 overall and fell 2-1 to Saginaw Valley State in the GLIAC quarterfinals. Brittany Nikolic has been head coach since June, 2015 and has helped Parkside to two GLIAC tournament appearances and one GLVC tournament appearance over her tenure.
