Late Goal Lifts No. 16 Ferris State Over Michigan Tech

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Failing to score a goal for the first time this season, Michigan Tech fell 1-0 to No. 16 ranked Ferris State on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Kearly Stadium in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference soccer.

Scoreless most of the contest, Maddie Dickens punched in the game winning shot from long range at the 85:50 mark of the second half. It was Dickens' first tally of the season and despite a slight deflection, snuck it past Tech goalkeeper Amanda Young.

The Bulldogs gradually turned the momentum in their favor and outshot the Huskies 16-8, including a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. Ferris State also earned six corners, including four in the first half, and held Tech to one corner attempt.

Michigan Tech had chances to score, most notably a shot by Grace Shaw that grazed the right goal post in the 61st minute. Taryn Meiste collected her fifth clean sheet in goal this season and third in a row for the Bulldogs. Meiste made two saves.

The Huskies fell to 3-3-1 overall with two games still to play in the regular season. Shaw led MTU with three shot attempts, including one on frame. Hannah Loughlin also forced Meiste to make a save but the Huskies struggled to push the ball into the offensive half following FSU's goal.

"Ferris State is a very good team that is well coached," commented Michigan Tech head coach Turk Ozturk. "They are technical, athletic, and have high soccer I.Q.'s. The game plan in the first half needed a few more adjustments and that ultimately falls on me to fix. In the second half, we were able to get back in the game and I was proud of our effort to fight back. In the end, we had a bit of bad luck and at this level, one mistake often proves to be very costly."

The Huskies host Wisconsin-Parkside at Kearly Stadium on Friday, April 16 at 7 p.m., then Purdue Northwest on Sunday at 12 p.m. on Senior Day. MTU needs to finish in the top eight in the GLIAC to qualify for the conference tournament. Ferris State stayed undefeated at 6-0-1 with just one goal allowed through seven games.
