Storm coming to Michigan Tech

Mary Storm has signed a National Letter of Intent to join Michigan Tech soccer for the fall athletic and academic season, announced by head coach Turk Ozturk Tuesday. Storm calls Brighton, Michigan home and was a capable midfielder and forward at Hartland High School. Storm became the eighth off-season recruit signing for the Huskies and the sixth 2021-22 freshman from the state of Michigan.

Head Coach Turk Ozturk and the Michigan Tech soccer program are pleased to announce a full slate of games for the 2021-22 season. The Huskies, fresh off a successful spring, return to the field in this fall with two exhibitions, four non-conference Minnesota based opponents, and 14 contests against familiar foes in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Michigan Tech soccer head coach Turk Ozturk has announced 10 team award winners for the 2020-21 season. Jesse Jacobusse was named team most valuable player. The Huskies finished the spring with a winning record (5-4-1) including a trip to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference quarterfinals.

The Michigan Tech soccer team had four players earn Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference recognition Saturday, announced by the conference office. Brooke Schauer, Neve Badalow, and Grace Shaw were all named All-GLIAC Second Team. Jesse Jacobusse also earned Honorable Mention.

Jesse Jacobusse posted her second multi-goal game of the spring, but Michigan Tech still fell 6-3 to defending national champion Grand Valley State University in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference quarterfinals Tuesday afternoon at GVSU Soccer Field. Lauren Ross posted two goals to help the No. 4 seed Lakers to four second half tallies.

Already, this spring has been a complete reversal of fortunes for Michigan Tech soccer. The Huskies finished the season 5-3-1 overall and earned a chance to compete in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament after missing out in 2019. With the No. 5 seed, Tech travels to No. 4 seed Grand Valley State to play Tuesday, April 27 at 4 p.m.

Erika Gabriel stopped a penalty kick and recorded her fourth shutout to assist the Huskies to a 1-0 home victory over Wisconsin-Parkside Friday afternoon at breezy Kearly Stadium in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference soccer. Forward Haley Ruiter scored the winning goal in the 43rd minute for Michigan Tech off a threaded pass up the middle of the box by Neve Badalow. Tech finished the GLIAC regular season 5-3-1 and qualified for the conference tournament quarterfinals in head coach Turk Ozturk’s first campaign at the helm.

Michigan Tech women’s soccer will make-up last week’s postponed Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Wisconsin-Parkside Friday, April 23 at 1 p.m. at Kearly Stadium. The Huskies (4-3-1) are coming off a 3-0 win against Purdue Northwest Sunday and are currently fourth in the 10-team conference standings. The GLIAC Tournament quarterfinals begin on Tuesday, April 27 with higher seeds hosting. The top-eight schools qualify for the postseason.

The Huskies posted 13 shots on goal and 14 corner kicks en route to a 3-0 win over Purdue Northwest in GLIAC women’s soccer Sunday afternoon at Kearly Stadium. Grace Shaw, Haley Ruiter, and Kiersen Korienek scored goals for Michigan Tech and Erika Gabriel made two saves to shut out the Pride.

The Michigan Tech soccer game against Wisconsin-Parkside scheduled for tonight at 7 p.m. at Kearly Stadium has been canceled. Sunday’s game against Purdue Northwest remains scheduled for Noon. Any additional updates or adjustments to Tech's soccer schedule will be made at a later time.

Michigan Tech soccer (3-3-1) will close regular season play in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this week with a pair of home games at Kearly Stadium. The Huskies host Wisconsin-Parkside (0-5-2) Friday at 7 p.m. followed by Purdue Northwest (1-5-1) Sunday at 12 p.m. for Senior Day. Both games can be streamed via MTU’s Stretch Internet Portal. Tech is currently fifth and must finish eighth or better to advance to the GLIAC Tournament. The Huskies are coming off a two-game split in Houghton last week. The team collected a 2-1 victory over Northwood Thursday, but fell 1-0 to No. 16 Ferris State on a cool, rainy Sunday.
