Soccer Announces Team Award Winners

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team has announced the award recipients for the 2019 season. Five Huskies were named award winners for their efforts on the field and in the classroom.

The two Most Valuable Player awards were awarded to junior Jesse Jacobusse for Offensive MVP and freshman Cassie Bonifas for the Defensive MVP. A junior from Chelsea, Michigan, Jacobusse started in all 16 games on the wing this season and finished second on the team with 11 points on four goals and three assists. Jacobusse scored the second brace of her Michigan Tech career when she scored twice in the team's 3-2 comeback win over Minnesota Duluth on September 8.

Bonifas, a freshman from Pinckney, Michigan, played in 16 games and made 13 starts as she helped the Huskies keep five clean sheets in 2019, and recorded her first Michigan Tech point when she tallied an assist against Saginaw Valley State on October 27. Her performances throughout the 2019 season earned Bonifas Second Team All-GLIAC honors. Bonifas was also the recipient of the Rookie of the Year award.

Seniors Alexie Flaminio and Maisy Snyder was awarded the Most Improved Players for the 2019 season. Flaminio appeared in 15 games with nine starts in her senior season as a central midfielder. For Snyder, the midfielder from Ada, Michigan, appeared in all 16 games with three starts as she scored three points on two goals and one assist. She scored her first Michigan Tech goal over Minnesota Crookston on September 15 and she scored from the penalty spot against Northern Michigan on October 13, and she recorded her assist against the Wildcats on November 8.

Kassity Swanson earned the 2019 Harold Meese Sportsmanship Award. A junior defender from Scandia, Minnesota who won the award in 2018, Swanson played in all 16 games and made 15 starts for the Huskies this season from central defense as she helped Michigan Tech in allowing the fourth-fewest goals in the GLIAC (27).

Michigan Tech was once again recipients of the United Soccer Coaches Academic Award for the team's academic achievements during the 2018-19 academic year, where they finished with a combined GPA of 3.42. The Huskies will look to enter the 2020 season with six incoming freshmen, as Molly Bolang (Pinckney, Mich.), Kiersen Korienek (Grandville, Mich.), Mikayla Marshalek (Rochester, Mich.), Geagan Olli (Gaylord, Mich.), Vayda Voss (Gaylord, Mich.), and Hadley Wells (Saginaw, Mich.) have committed to play for Michigan Tech.
