Huskies End Season with 2-1 Defeat to Northern Michigan

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team ended the regular season with a 2-1 defeat to Northern Michigan on Friday (Nov. 8) inside the Superior Dome.

Jesse Jacobusse scored the goal for the Huskies in the 66th minute, with senior Maisy Snyder providing the assist. Immediately following a goal kick, the Huskies attacked the Northern Michigan end and Snyder delivered a perfectly weighted through ball for Jacobusse, and the junior winger finished expertly for her fourth tally of the season.

NMU (5-12, 2-7 GLIAC) got on the board in the 8th minute when freshman Cassie Bonifas committed a foul inside the penalty box. Jaime Montgomery stepped up to the spot and buried her shot past freshman Gracie VanLangevelde. The Wildcats added their second goal in the 59th minute off a header by Gaelin Hirabayashi from a Caroline Halonen corner kick.

Michigan Tech finished the day with 12 shots, including nine in the second half, while Northern Michigan took 14 shots as both teams finished with eight shots on target. The Huskies earned seven corner kicks to the Wildcats' five, and Tech drew eight fouls while committing only three.

VanLangevelde posted six saves against eight shots faced, while Brianna Frontuto racked up six saves on seven shots faced for the Wildcats. Jacobusse and sophomore Gabby Sgambati finished as the leading shot-takers for the Huskies with three total shots, while the two plus sophomore Stephanie Yeager tied for most shots on goal for Tech with two each. Northern Michigan's Kiera Scanlan picked up the only yellow card on the day in the 82nd minute.

"The team battled hard and unfortunately we came up short," head coach Michelle Jacob said. "It's a tough day for the team and especially the seniors. We are so thankful for all the time and effort the seniors and their families put into the program. We're sad to see them go."

Following today's loss, the Huskies see their record sit at 5-10-1 overall and 2-7 against conference opponents. The loss bumps Michigan Tech out of the 2019 GLIAC Tournament based on the head-to-head tiebreaker with Northern Michigan. Stay tuned to for all Michigan Tech soccer news.
