Huskies Defeated 3-0 Against #3 Grand Valley State

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Despite putting in a great effort on defense, the Michigan Tech soccer team was defeated 3-0 against No. 3 Grand Valley State on Sunday (Oct. 20) from Sherman Field at Kearly Stadium. With their fifth-straight loss, the Huskies fall to 3-7-1 overall and 0-4 in the GLIAC.
"We didn't win the game out there today, but we had a lot of victories and a lot things to be proud of," said head coach Michelle Jacob. "I was really impressed with our team today. We gave them a game-plan and they needed to play really disciplined to execute it, and I thought they did that today."
While they allowed the Lakers to take 24 shots, the Huskies defense limited their opponents to only four shots on goal as they blocked seven Grand Valley State shots. Junior Amanda Young also had a hand in the defensive effort today, making one save and snuffing out any dangerous crosses that came into her area.
"It was a case of our entire team working together and playing very disciplined on defense to keep everything in front of them," Jacob said. "Grand Valley State are a very good team and have very good players, and I think our team rose to the challenge today."
The Huskies held Grand Valley State (11-1, 4-0 GLIAC) off the board until the 44th minute of the first half. Makenna Schoolman maneuvered her way into the Huskies penalty area and passed to Ava Cook, who won a tough individual battle with senior Anne Fife, and she fired through the crowded Huskies defense and into the back of the net.
The Lakers made it 2-0 in the 49th minute with a goal by Riko Sagara off a cross from Greta Deloach. Deloach would get on the scoresheet for the Lakers with a 63rd minute goal after receiving a driven cross from Sydney O'Donnell and finishing from close range.
All three of Michigan Tech's shots came in the second half, with sophomore Gabby Sgambati and junior Brooke Schauer putting shots on target that forced the GVSU goalkeeper into making saves. Senior Alexie Flaminio also had a shot for the Huskies today, but she pulled it just wide.
The Huskies will return to action on Friday (Oct. 25) when they host Ashland at 7 p.m. 10-1-1 overall and 4-0 in GLIAC play, the No. 25 Eagles have won seven straight games and are coming off a pair of 2-1 wins against Ferris State and Saginaw Valley State.
