Huskies Blank Minnesota Crookston for 2-0 Win

CROOKSTON, Minn. – The Michigan Tech soccer team bounced back from Friday's disappointing loss with a 2-0 win over Minnesota Crookston Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Gabby Sgambati and senior Maisy Snyder provided the goals for the Huskies, bringing them to 2-1-1 on the year with the win while Minnesota Crookston opens the year at 0-1-0.

"We had two nice goals today from team play," said head coach Michelle Jacob. "We were able to hold more of the possession, which created a lot of shots and corners for us."

Sgambati put Michigan Tech on the board in the 12th minute when she received a long ball down the left flank from sophomore Stephanie Yeager. Sgambati got a touch to the ball and maneuvered around the charging goalkeeper before slotting it home into the far side of the net for the goal.

Towards the end of the contest, sophomore Alexis Shatrau found Snyder in space around midfield and the senior from Ada, Michigan slalomed through the Golden Eagle (0-1-0) defense before taking a shot from the top of the box. Her shot deflected off a defender and into the net for the first goal of her career to put the scoreline at 2-0 in favor of the Huskies.

The Michigan Tech defense was stout against Minnesota Crookston, allowing them only three shots all day while allowing zero corner kicks. Conversely, the Huskies took 18 shots with nine on frame and drew eight corner kicks. Freshman Gracie VanLangevelde was forced into making two saves on the afternoon, and she picked up the first clean sheet of her Michigan Tech career.

Paige Pettit and Vanessa Shelton had the two shots on goal for Minnesota Crookston. In goal, Athena DiMarioDone faced nine shots on goal and made seven saves for the Golden Eagles.

Michigan Tech will face Purdue Northwest on September 27 at 5 p.m. in the first home match of the season for the Huskies. Michigan Tech won both contests over the Pride last season.
