Huskies Record Impressive 3-0 GLIAC Win at Northwood

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team closed the weekend with 3-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference shutout victory at Northwood University on Sunday afternoon. The Huskies posted a season high in goals and two quick scores midway through the first half swung the momentum in their favor for the rest of the match.

"I'm proud of the effort of our team today and I thought we did a better job of capitalizing on scoring opportunities," Michigan Tech Head Coach Michelle Jacob said. "We did a really good job possessing the ball and putting pressure on them especially in the first period. Our defense was outstanding again today and I thought Megan (Armstrong) stepped up for us on the back line. It's also good to see our offense getting goals from a variety of different people this weekend."

Michigan Tech (8-2-1, 4-1-1 GLIAC) got the offensive attack rolling in the 24^th minute with some intense pressure in the box, forcing a foul by the Northwood (6-5-0, 3-3-0) defense. The result was a penalty kick opportunity and the Huskies took advantage. Senior Jaci Mielke was called upon to take the kick and fired the ball past the keeper for her fifth goal of the season.

The Huskies didn't waste much time adding to their 1-0 advantage. In the 26^th minute Tech made it a 2-0 contest when freshman Katri Studtmann planted the ball in the back of the net for her first goal of the 2016 campaign. Junior Darby McLaurin picked up the assist on a beautiful crossing pass from the right side that found the foot of Studtmann for the quick touch and score.

Michigan Tech carried the 2-0 edge into the break and promptly made it a 3-0 match less than a minute into the second half. McLaurin would secure the goal this time for the Huskies, her first of the 2016 season. Mielke delivered the ball on a cross to the six on the left side of the box where McLaurin was open for the shot. Mielke earned her fifth the assist of the season on the McLaurin goal.

From there the Huskies defense took over and kept the Timberwolves offense in check on the way to their fifth shutout this season. Junior goalie Kirsen Hudak made her only save of the match in the 66^th minute on a shot off the foot of Savannah King. The Tech defense also earned a team save in the 67^th minute to keep the shutout intact on Sunday afternoon.

McLaurin fired a team high three shots for the Huskies followed by Mielke and freshman Alex Vasile with two shots apiece. Mielke, Studtmann and McLaurin garnered the goals in Sunday afternoon's match. As a team, the Huskies out-shot Northwood 10-7 while the corner kick category was even at 5-5. Hudak played all 90 minutes in net and picked up her eighth win of the season and fifth shutout.

Allison Carroll had three shots to pace the Timberwolves offense while Samantha Cook and Lauren Earley split time in goal with each player logging 45 minutes. Cook suffered the loss after allowing both first half goals.

Michigan Tech will be back on the road next weekend when the team heads to Ohio for two more GLIAC contests. The Huskies will take on Lake Erie Friday before visiting Walsh on Sunday. Friday's kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. followed by a noon start at Walsh Sunday.
