Bio

Charlie Kemppainen begins his third season as an assistant coach with the Michigan Tech women’s basketball team in 2020-21. Kemppainen spent the previous five years as a part-time assistant for the men's basketball program.

In his first season as a coach for the women's program (2018-19), Kemppainen helped Head Coach Sam Hoyt guide the Huskies to a 21-9 overall record and a 16-4 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Huskies claimed their 16th GLIAC North Division/Conference title and were the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament. In his second season (2019-20), the Huskies made their 30th consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament appearance in program history.

Kemppainen was the head men’s basketball coach at Finlandia University for nine seasons (2002-11).

Prior to his time at Finlandia, Kemppainen was the head boy’s coach at Hancock Central High School. He coached the Bulldogs for nine years and won the 2000-01 Class D District Championship.

He was also an assistant coach with the Finlandia Lions softball team that qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament in 2012-13.
