Huskies Battle NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay in Exhibition Contest

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Michigan Tech women's basketball team battled NCAA Division I University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in an exhibition game Thursday night on the road. The Huskies fell 87-49, but held their own against one of the top NCAA Division I teams in the country.

"I was really proud of a lot of different things throughout this game tonight," Michigan Tech Head Coach Kim Cameron said. "I thought we competed hard the entire night. We tied them in offensive rebounding, we played even with them through the majority of the fourth quarter, scored double digit points in three of the four quarters, and limited our turnovers to five in the second half. These are some of the positives we can take out this game tonight as we move forward. There are some things we need to work on and we will do that, but our players worked hard and showed a lot of competitiveness tonight."

UW-Green Bay jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead on four layups in the early moments of the first quarter. Frankie Wurtz knocked down the first field goal of the contest and then Allie LeClaire connected on the fourth layup with 8:08 showing on the first quarter clock.

Senior Kellie Guy put Michigan Tech on the board a few seconds later on the first of her three triples in the game. The Phoenix bumped their advantage to 20-5 on a pair of free throws by Karly Murphy at the 4:36 mark, but the Huskies closed the gap back to nine points at 20-11 on a pair of triples by senior Brenna Heise with 3:36 left in the first. The Phoenix would close out the quarter with a LeClaire layup and carry a 26-14 advantage into the second.

UW-Green Bay's defense limited Tech to seven points in the second quarter and extended the gap to 43-21 at the intermission. Heise had five of the points and sophomore Abbie Botz picked up a field goal in the second quarter for the Huskies.

Guy opened the third period for the Huskies with her second triple, but a 10-0 Phoenix run pushed the score to 53-24 with just under five minutes remaining in the third. Senior Lindsay Winer stopped the run on a jumper and hit a three-point bucket with 35 seconds to go in the quarter. Guy and sophomore Baillie McGirk provided points in the third frame as well.

Trailing 63-33 through three quarters, the Huskies kept battling and put together a solid fourth quarter. Heise tacked on five more points early on followed by Guy with five straight points on a triple and mid-range jumper. Junior forward Elizabeth Kelliher blocked a shot to setup up Guy's triple. McGirk picked up two more points and Tech's defense forced the Phoenix to take more shots from the perimeter.

Heise led all scorers with 16 points while grabbing six rebounds in addition to two blocked shots. Guy followed by pouring in 15 points, two assists, and two steals with a strong second half. Winter chipped in with five points and dished out four assists in the contest. As a team, the Huskies were 19 of 57 from the field (33.3%) and 10 for 33 from behind the three-point arc (30.3). Tech was even in offensive rebounds with UW-Green Bay at eight apiece.

The Phoenix had three players in double figures, led by LeClaire with 15 points followed by Laken James and Alex Luehring with 10 points each. Jessica Lindstrom dropped in nine points and grabbed a game high eight rebounds. The Phoenix connected on 33 of 59 shots from the field (55.9%), and were 7 of 15 from three-point range (73.7%). They also converted 14 of 19 looks at the charity stripe (46.7%).

The Huskies will tip-off the regular season Friday November 10^th against Davis & Elkins in Pepper Pike, Ohio. The Huskies are ranked 21^st in the WBCA NCAA Division II Preseason Top 25 Poll and are coming off a 20-8 season in 2016-17. Friday's tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
