Huskies Roll to 80-46 Win at Tiffin

TIFFIN, Ohio – The Michigan Tech women's basketball team wrapped up the week with a dominating 80-46 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win on the road at Tiffin University Saturday afternoon. It was the definition of a team effort with 12 different Huskies scoring points in the victory.

"This was a big win for us today and I thought we played extremely well in all facets of the game," Michigan Tech Head Coach Kim Cameron said. "We had some early foul trouble, but overcame it when a number of players stepped up big for us. I thought Lindsay (Winter) provided a spark for us early and helped lead our offense in the first half. They were one of the top three-point shooting teams in the conference coming in and our defense did a great job taking that away and limiting what they could do on offense. "It was also great to see so many players make contributions for us on the floor today. Our younger players gained a lot of valuable minutes which will also help us down the road."

Tiffin (4-9, 2-6 GLIAC) held the lead just twice on Saturday with both coming in the first three minutes of the game. Bre Nauman converted two free throws to open the scoring and give the Dragons a 2-0 edge at the 9:29 mark of the first quarter. Michigan Tech (9-3, 5-2 GLIAC) quickly tied the score at 2-2 when senior Morgan Anderson drove to the basket for a layup on the ensuing possession. Nauman briefly sent the Dragons ahead again at 3-2 on her third free throw of the contest with 7:39 on the clock, but once again it wouldn't last for long.

Anderson connected on a triple for Tech a few seconds later before Tiffin's Sarah Cummings tied the game at 5-5 on a jumper with 7:05 left in the first half. The next four points went up on the Huskies' side of the scoreboard thanks to a pair of layups by junior Hannah Stoll. A trey by Allie Miller trimmed Tech's lead to 9-8, but that's as close as Tiffin would get the rest of the day.

The Huskies proceeded to go on a 9-0 run over the next four minutes to turn the momentum in their favor. Stoll knocked down a jumper for her third straight basket to get the scoring run started followed by a free throw and jumper from sophomore Elizabeth Kelliher. A pair of free throws from redshirt freshman Abbie Botz and junior Lindsay Winter put the Huskies up 18-8 with just over a minute left in the first quarter. Madison Jackson stopped the scoring drought for Tiffin with two free throws, but Winter beat the buzzer with a triple to give Tech a 21-10 lead going into the second quarter.

The Huskies increased the gap to 16 points at 26-10 with the first five points in the second quarter. Botz banked in a layup and Anderson dialed in a 3-point bucket with 9:05 left to play in the first half. The Dragons closed to within single digits again at 28-19 on a trey by Miller with 6:19 remaining in the second quarter, but the Huskies would wrap up the second quarter in the same fashion as the first. Tech scored 13 of the final 15 points in the second quarter to carry a 41-21 lead into the locker room at halftime. Winter, freshman Baillie McGirk, Botz, junior Elisa Jurmu, and sophomore Michelle LaFave all poured in points for Tech during the stretch.

In the third quarter, the Huskies defense held Tiffin to seven points as the lead continued to grow. Tech's largest advantage of the game came late in the fourth quarter when McGirk dropped in two free throws to make it 78-42 with 1:28 on the clock. Sophomore Bella O'Brien recorded the final two points of the afternoon for Tech in Saturday's win.

Winter had a season high 16 points and eight rebounds to power the Huskies on Saturday afternoon. Winter was 5 of 9 shooting from the field and came up with three steals on the defensive end of the floor. McGirk followed with a season and career high 14 points by going 4 for 4 from the field and 6 for 7 at the free throw line. Anderson rounded out the double digit scorers for Tech with 10 points against the Dragons. Stoll had eight points while Kelliher Botz, and LaFave ended the day with six points each. Kelliher was tough in the paint defensively with four blocked shots.

As a team, the Huskies connected on 29 of 62 shots from the field (46.8%), were 6 of 18 from three-point range (33.3%), and 16 for 18 at the free throw line (88.9%). Tech enjoyed a 51-32 surplus in rebounds, created 23 points off turnovers, scored 34 points in the paint, and the bench outscored Tiffin's reserves 62-12.

Kristen Massey paced the Dragons with 14 points followed by Sarah Cummings with 10 points Saturday. Nauman chipped in six points and a team high seven rebounds. The Dragons were limited to a 14 of 60 shooting day from the field (23.3%), were 5 of 20 from behind the arc (25.0%), and 13 of 18 at the free throw line (72.2%).

Michigan Tech will be on the road again next week when the team travels to Wayne State and Saginaw Valley State for two more GLIAC showdowns. Tip-off for Thursdays game at Wayne State is slated for 5:37 p.m.
