Emily Byrd (Environmental Engineering) and Clayton Sayen (Engineering Management) have been named All-Academic Athletes for the 2021 NCAA Division II Men’s Track & Field season by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Three Michigan Tech track and field student athletes participated in the St. Francis Fighting Chance Invitational over the weekend, in search on NCAA qualifying times for Nationals on May 27. Top distance runner Emily Byrd finished fourth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 36:07.76. She edged under the NCAA provisional standard of 36:35 for the second time this spring and is currently No. 23 on the qualification list. Previously, Byrd posted a season best time of 35:48.51 at the 54th annual Hillsdale College Gina Relays on April 22.

Michigan Tech’s Katherine Jarvis broke the school record in shotput Friday as the Huskies finished three days of competition in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference outdoor track and field Championships. The men tied for sixth place (with Wisconsin-Parkside) with 36 points. The women’s team took ninth place with 18.50 points. While Tech finished below expectations overall, they had several notable individual performances. Grand Valley State finished at the top of the standings with 300.50 points from the men and 248 points by the women.

Emily Byrd set an NCAA provisional mark in her first 10,000 meter event of the season and the Huskies competed well at the 54th annual GINA Relays, hosted by Hillsdale College from Thursday to Saturday in men's and women's outdoor track and field. Byrd crossed the line in sixth place with a time of 35:48.51. The Huskies also set 17 individual personal bests at Ken Herrick Track.

The Michigan Tech men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Al Owens Classic April 16-17, hosted by Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich. The Huskies lineup was complimented by a full slate of throwers this week. Katherine Jarvis topped flight two in women's shot put with a mark of 12.05 meters. Mya Ghazale finished sixth in flight one with a throw of 8.16 meters. Ghazale also took sixth place in flight two of discus with a mark of 29.91 meters.

Michigan Tech outdoor track and field student-athletes posted 21 individual event personal bests to make a strong showing Saturday at the Golden Grizzlies Meet, hosted by Oakland University. Highlight events included Braden Reichl's win in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and MTU's Cody Tuftee and Toby Bonner taking the top two podium spots in Pole Vault. Tuftee cleared 4.73 meters (15' 6.25") to surpass his previous top height. Bonner, a freshman, took a mark of 4.40 meters (14' 5.25") and also finished fifth in javelin.

Traveling with three qualifiers in search of NCAA provisional marks, Michigan Tech track and field traveled to Austin, Texas for the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays Thursday and finished up competition Saturday afternoon at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Clayton Sayen, Braden Reichl, and Emily Byrd made the trip representing the Huskies, up against schools from all over the country, including NCAA Division I institutions.

Michigan Tech men's and women's outdoor track and field season began Saturday at the St. Norbert Equinox Classic and the both Husky teams took second place out of three with several individual event winners and strong performances. In men's competition, host St. Norbert topped the team chart with 184 points. Tech scored 131.5 and Ripon tallied 35.5 points. In women's track and field, St. Norbert scored 161. MTU posted 81 with Ripon at 68.

Kristina Owen has been named the head coach of the Michigan Tech men's and women's cross country and track and field teams athletic director Suzanne Sanregret announced Monday, (Aug. 17).
