Huskies Impressive at St. Norbert College Twilight Meet
DE PERE, Wis. – The Michigan Tech men's and women's track & field teams both turned in outstanding performances on Thursday night at the St. Norbert College Twilight meet. The Huskies claimed first place on the men's side with 270.5 points while the women secured second in the team standings with 164 points in the second meet of the season for both teams.
"This was a good start for us," Michigan Tech Head Coach Jake Isaacson said. "We had some great opening performances today, and the team scores showed that. We still have a lot to improve upon and these next three weeks will provide us with great competition to better ourselves."
The Tech men turned in eight first place finishes in events during Thursday night's meet. Korson Mundinger led the charge with two of them in both the 100 Meter and 200 Meter runs. Mundinger covered the distance in the 100 Meter Run in 11.11 seconds and in the process earned 10 points for the Huskies in the team standings. Tech's Jacob Jarvis also placed in the top ten in the 100 at the No. 7 spot (11.76).
In the 200 Meter Run, Mundinger edged Jon Gregory for the top spot with a time of 22.77 and once again notched 10 team points. Gregory crossed the line with a time of 22.97. Zach Okma of Michigan Tech also finished seventh in the 200 with a time of 24.22.
Brendan Klynstra hit in the line in first place during the 1500 Meter Run thanks to a time of 4:06.17. Chase Scheel and Nate Carey also logged top five finishes in the event with times of 4:16.76 and 4:18.76 respectively. Carey and Scheel earned the top two spots in the 3000 Meter Run Thursday night. Carey was in first with a time of 8:59.03 followed by Scheel with his time of 9:04.82.
Jason Bell, Gage Armstrong, and Jarvis took second, third, and fourth in the 110m Hurdles with times of 15.79, 16.44, and 16.51 seconds respectively. Hanbyul Johnson finished first in the 3000m Steeple with a time of 10:01.09 while the top three positions in the Pole Vault belonged to the Huskies as well. Keith Lemley was first with a mark of 4.65m followed by Jon Nelson in second (4.28m) and Riley Roquet in third (4.28m).
Jarvis, Brown, Mundinger, and Bell guided the Huskies to first place in the 4x100 Meter Relay with a time of 43.87. John Bailey, Mike Tuski, Joshua Rzeppa, and Jacob Namyst powered Tech to first place in the 4x400 Meter relay, turning in a team time of 3:29.40.
Top finishers in the Triple Jump for Tech were Huey (2nd, 12.7m) and Ben Mahonen (3rd, 12.69m). Noah Dobrzelewski placed second in the Discus (34.48m) and third in the Shot Put (12.74m) on Thursday night. Michael James claimed second place in the Javelin with a throw of 43.64m.
The Michigan Tech women's team had six first places finishes in events during Thursday's meet. Liz Bloch crossed the line first in the 1500 Meter Run with a time of 4:38.51 and also nearly took first place in the 400 Meter Run thanks to a time of 1:01.65 to land in second place. Aimee Allen and Jesse Jacobusse were close behind in the third (1:03.11) and fourth place (1:03.89) respectively.
Chloe Strach finished first in the 5000 Meter Run with a time of 19:43.65 while Ashley Veale and Robyn Holmes finished first in the 400m Hurdles and 3000m Steeplechase. Veale clocked a time of 1:05.45 in the Hurdles and Holmes garnered first in the Steeplechase by covering the distance in 11:49.44.
The Huskies also finished in first place in the 4x400 Meter Relay led by Allen, Madisyn Estkowski, Bloch, and Veale. The team turned in a time of 4:08.95 and grabbed 10 points in the team standings for the Huskies. Emily Vigil and Julia Manzano were near the top of the standings in the 3000 Meter Run Thursday. Vigil was second with a time of 9:53.92 and Manzano was third with a time of 9:56.72.
In field events on Thursday, the Huskies had some strong performances as well, led by Jenna Burns who placed first in the Shot Put with a throw of 11.85m. Sarah Montgomery was third in the Pole Vault (3.07m) while Allen took third place as well in the Long Jump with a mark of 5.12m. Kayla Brei generated a fourth place finish in the Triple Jump with a mark of 10.17m.
The Huskies will be back in action on Friday April 6th and Saturday April 7th at the Hillsdale Invitational. Tech also added a meet to the schedule and will compete at the Benedictine University Relays on April 13th and 14th.
