Huskies Wrap Up Weekend at GVSU Al Owens Invitational
ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Michigan Tech men's and women's track and field teams closed the weekend at the Al Owens Invitational on Saturday which was hosted by Grand Valley State University. The men finished 8th in the team standings while the women ended the meet in 15th place in the final standings.
Ashley Veale highlighted the weekend for the Tech women by placing 6th in the 400 Meter Hurdles. Veale hit the line in a time of 1:03.20 and was just a couple seconds off the first place pace which was set by Madison Arnouts of Northwood (Mich.) who won the event with a time of 1:01.70.
The Huskies had two top ten finishes in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase with Robyn Holmes landing in the No. 8 spot overall. Holmes recorded a time of 12:02.38 when she reached the finish line. Teammate Carly Huggins was 10th in the event standings thanks to a time of 12:16.82.
Shane McGrath powered the Tech men with a seventh place finish in the 110 Meter Hurdles, covering the distance in 15.33 seconds. McGrath was 8th in the preliminaries out of 33 competitors to get himself into the finals which featured just nine contenders.
McGrath then moved up one spot in the 400 Meter Hurdles to take home sixth place in that race. McGrath's time of 55.68 was just over two seconds behind TJ Burnett of GVSU who outpaced the field with a time of 52.55 seconds.
The 3000 Meter Steeplechase featured two Huskies in the top ten, led by Nate Carey who claimed second place followed by Ethan Norstog in nine place. Carey recorded of time of 9:43.58 while Norstog checked in with a time of 10:05.51.
Tech had a strong weekend in field events starting with Keith Lemley who tied for fourth in the Pole Vault with a mark of 4.56m. Riley Roquet landed just outside the top ten with a mark of 4.16m, tying him for 13th place.
In the Long Jump, Chad Brown notched 10th place with a leap of 6.18m and in the Triple Jump two more Huskies boasted top ten finishes. Ben Mahonen was fourth with a jump of 12.52m while Hunter Warden claimed seventh place after covering a distance of 11.76m.
Kyle Peterman capped the field events for Tech by garnering eight points in the team standings with a second place performance in the Discus Throw. Peterman's toss traveled 52.22m, enabling him to edge out Justin Scavarda for the No. 2 spot in the standings.
The Huskies will be back on track as a team beginning Thursday at the Gina Relays hosted by Hillsdale College. The three-day meet will wrap up on Saturday.
