Huskies Impressive at Saint John's (Minn.) Invitational
COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The Michigan Tech men's and women's track and field teams, coming off strong performances last weekend at the Augustana Viking Olympics, recorded two top six team finishes on Saturday at the Saint John's Invitational. The women landed in fourth place with 64.0 points while the men claimed sixth place with 64.0 points.
Jamie Dompier highlighted the day for the Tech women with a first place finish in the 100 Meter Dash while taking third place in the 200 Meter Dash. Dompier out-ran the field of 32 competitors in the 100-meter dash thanks to a time of 12.77. She was 0.2 seconds faster than Briana Berninghaus of Hamiline who placed second. In the 200, Dompier nearly grabbed first again, but settled for third after crossing the line in 26.69 seconds, just over 0.2 seconds off the pace.
Lauren Tetzloff cracked the top ten in the 400 Meter Dash, placing fourth with a time of 60.80 seconds. It was one of 11 events that featured top ten performances by the women on Saturday at the meet. The 1500 Meter Run saw two Huskies breakthrough for spots in the top ten. Emily Bryd hit the line in 5:05.52 for fifth and Julia Manzano was ninth on the strength of a time of 5:10.16.
Erin Lipp took home ninth place in the 400 Meter Hurdles (71.97) while Cassie Gietek (12:20.91), Carly Huggins (12:21.14), and Robyn Holmes (12:33.26) claimed fourth, fifth, and seventh places respectively in the 3000m Steeplechase.
Dompier helped anchor the Tech 4x100 Meter Relay team which finished in first place Saturday with a time of 48.47. In the 4x400 Meter Relay, the Huskies were second after recording a combined time of 3:59.95. Tech was just over two seconds out of first which was secured by Bethel (Minn.) at a speed of 3:57.31. In the 1500 Meter Run, Emily Vigil placed seventh in with a time of 5:06.62 and Julia Manzano landed in the number seven spot with a time of 5:10.16.
In field events, Aimee Allen was second in the Long Jump with a leap of 5.29m and wasn't far behind Tori Thompson of St. Catherine who won it with a jump of 5.43m. Kayla Brei finished ninth in the Triple Jump (9.07m) and Alyssa Smith was eighth in the Javelin Throw (30.08m) to round out the top ten performers for Tech on Saturday.
Kyle Petermann powered the Tech men's team on Saturday by finishing first in the Discus Throw at the Saint John's Invitational. Petermann launched the discuss 49.42m on his way to the victory.
In the pole vault, the Huskies had four athletes in the top five including the first two spots. Keith Lemley won the event with a mark of 4.40m followed by Gabriel Wykle and Zach Klassen who each tied for second at 4.10m. Riley Roquet checked in at No. 5 with a vault that carried him over the bar at 3.95m.
Jacob Evilsizer earned a spot in the top ten of the Shot Put with a throw of 12.67m that locked down ninth place in the standings. James Huey capped the field events for Tech by finishing fourth in the Triple Jump with a mark of 12.90m.
On the track, Corey Zeutzius was eighth in a field of 53 competitors in the 800 Meter Run Saturday. Zeutzius crossed the line in a time of 1:59.357 and was less than three seconds off the first place pace. Zeutzius came back to get another top ten finish, this time notching seventh place in the 1500 Meter Run after hitting the line in 4:10.14.
Three Huskies were in the top ten of the 110 Meter Hurdles standings on Saturday, led by Jacob Jarvis in second place with a time of 16.06. Larry Lamb followed in fifth (16.46) and Gage Armstrong was ninth (16.92 in the field of 20 athletes.
Armstrong, Shane McGrath, and Lamb represented Tech in the top ten of the 400 Meter Hurdles as well. Armstrong led the charge in third place with a time of 56.78 seconds followed by McGrath in fifth (57.15) and Lamb in 10th (60.86). In the 4x400 Meter Relay, Michigan Tech's "A" team took third place overall (3:30.11) followed by the "B" team in sixth place (3:37.78).
The Huskies will be back in action on Thursday at the St. Norbet Twilight Invitational.
