Track Teams Have Strong Showings at GLIAC Championships
BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Michigan Tech track and field teams wrapped up competition at the GLIAC Championships today (May 6) at Top Taggart Field on the campus of Ferris State University.
Both the men's and women's teams produced several impressive results, including provisional finishes and top-10 Tech results.
On the men's side, Casey Buckner won the javelin event with a throw of 195-04, good for both a provisional mark and the No. 2 spot all-time on the Michigan Tech charts.
Jevon Maddox notched a provisional time in the 400-meter hurdles final, running the event in 52.80 – the third-best score at the championships and a Tech school record.
Jason Saliga turned in an impressive time in the 3000-meter steeplechase at 9:20.10 and captured third place in the event.
Jake Jurkowski placed sixth in the pole vault finals at 15-01.75 to put himself into the Michigan Tech record books with a top-10 all-time effort.
Zach Klassen and Brent Cousino finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the decathlon event.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Maddox, John Bailey, Isaac Pringle and Michael Tuski finished sixth and posted a time of 3:18.75 – the best mark in Tech history.
Buckner was named to the All-GLIAC First Team for his efforts, while Saliga and Maddox both earned All-GLIAC Third Team honors.
The men's squad finished the GLIAC Championships in seventh place with 42 points.
The women's team also turned in numerous impressive times and results, highlighted by Ashley Veale's performance in the 400-meter hurdles. Veale, who finished sixth in the GLIAC finals, ran the event in 1:02.09 to break the school record and hit a provisional time.
Sophia Farquhar placed seventh in the 10k with a time of 37:23.06 to reset the Tech all-time record.
Liz Bloch's time of 2:14.10 in the prelims of the 800-meter run is a top-10 all-time mark for a Tech athlete.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Veale, Aimee Allen, Jamie Dompier and Lauren Tetzloff set a new school record by running the event in 47.63. The team finished sixth in the competition. That group was also impressive in the 4x400, running the race in 3:54.41 and setting a new top-10 time.
The women's team finished the championship in 11th place.
In addition to the men's all-conference performances, each student-athlete who scored points during the championship was named to the All-GLIAC Honorable Mention Team. For complete results from the GLIAC Championships, click here.
