HOUGHTON, Mich. – No. 20 Michigan Tech and No. 10 Minnesota State skated to a 2-2 tie Saturday. The Mavericks earned the extra CCHA point in the fourth round of the shootout after overtime.

"It's a hard pill to swallow with the way it ended, but if you would've told me that we would get a point tonight with the number of defensemen out I would've been happy," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "It'll be a learning experience, especially with a number of guys playing out of position."

Tech (9-3-3, 5-2-3 CCHA) entered the third period with a 1-0 lead before MSU (8-5-1, 5-2-1 CCHA) tied the game 8:34 into the third period. David Silye scored on a big rebound after a shot by Andy Carroll was saved as the two teams skated 4-on-4.

Tristan Ashbrook gave the Huskies their lead back 3:14 later with a laser from the top of the circle for his second of the season. Logan Ganie had the primary assist with a feed across the line and Topi Heiskanen also assisted with a blocked shot.

The Huskies were called for a tripping penalty with 1:27 left and the Mavericks went to work after pulling the goaltender for a 6-on-4 advantage. Ryan Sandelin tied the game with 39.8 seconds left, finishing off a backdoor pass from Cade Borchardt. His first chance was saved but he banged in the rebound.

Both teams had great chances in the overtime as each managed six shots on goal.

Tristan Ashbrook gave Tech a lead in the shootout in the second round, but David Silye also scored in the second and Christian Fitzgerald won it in the fourth.

"We're pretty frustrated. We had the lead a couple of times and gave it up but we played good hockey," Ashbrook said. "I had a step on the defender on the goal and tried to sneak it upstairs. It went in."

Tech jumped out to the lead 14:48 into the game when David Jankowski extended his point streak to five games with his third of the season and 23rd of his collegiate career. He corralled a loose puck and put it past the sprawling goaltender with Arvid Caderoth and Kash Rasmussen assisting.

Blake Pietila tied a career-high with 43 saves. He stopped nine in each of the first two periods, 19 in the third, and six in overtime. Keenan Rancier made 27 saves for the Mavericks.

Tech was 0-for-2 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.

The Huskies play a home-and-away series with Northern Michigan next weekend. The Wildcats will host Friday at 7:07 p.m. at the Berry Events Center with the series wrapping up Saturday at 6:07 p.m. at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

General admission tickets for Saturday's game are now on sale at the SDC Central Ticket Office.
