Huskies sweep Ferris State to win Winter Carnival

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Michigan Tech won the MacInnes Trophy as Winter Carnival Champions after defeating Ferris State 5-1 Saturday (Feb. 13) at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The Huskies won their sixth game in a row and fourth over the Bulldogs this season to improve to 14-5-1.
"We played a pretty good hockey game," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "It didn't feel like it was a 5-1 game. It's hard enough to beat a team twice in a row let alone three in a row and four times in a season. It's great to get the trophy back and it's good to see our juniors get the trophy for the first time in their careers. They've been a huge part of our program since they got here."
Alec Broetzman was named Winter Carnival MVP after scoring two goals and adding an assist on the weekend.
"It's pretty cool to be MVP, but it's better to win the trophy as a team," Broetzman said. "It's the first time we've won it since I've been here."
The Captain opened scoring 15:51 into the game with his eighth of the season. A tight angle shot by Arvid Caderoth was saved and Broetzman was at the doorstep to knock it in. The officials initially waved it off but reviewed the play and called it a goal. Jake Crespi created a turnover in the corner and was credited with the secondary assist.
Colin Swoyer made it 2-0 Huskies with his second of the season 14:14 into the middle period. He caught a pass from Brett Thorne and found space to walk in and wrist a shot into the back net. Parker Saretsky had the second assist.
The Bulldogs (1-17-1) cut into the lead 3:23 into the third with a goal by Stepan Pokorny after he tipped in a shot by Marshall Moise.
Tech then scored three straight to take a commanding lead. Logan Ganie pushed it back to a two-goal lead at 9:59 of the third. A shot by Logan Pietila was saved and Ganie found the rebound and put in his second of the season. Eric Gotz added an assist.
Former junior teammates Ryland Mosley and Brett Thorne connected on a 2-on-1 4:40 later. Thorne earned his second assist of the night when carried the puck all the way down and fed Mosley at the perfect moment for his first career goal.
"I didn't even know it was Ryland until the celebration," Thorne said "It'll be a moment we won't ever forget. I was pushing him to come here and it's been awesome having him here."
Trenton Bliss got involved only 48 seconds later with his team-leading ninth of the season for a 5-1 lead. Brian Halonen took a shot that was saved and Bliss was near the crease to clean up the rebound. Chris Lipe also assisted.
Tech dominated in shots for the second night in a row, 46-21. Blake Pietila earned his 11th win of the season with 20 saves. Logan Stein had 41 saves for the visitors, including a beautiful glove save on Tommy Parrottino in the third period and a stop on a penalty shot by Justin Misiak midway through the first period.
The Huskies outscored the Bulldogs 8-1 on the weekend for the total goal trophy. The one goal ties the Winter Carnival record for the fewest goals allowed.
Tech continues a seven-game home stand by hosting Lake Superior State on Tuesday for game 1 of a two-game WCHA series. They will also meet on February 23.
"Lake State is a good hockey team," added Shawhan. "They're big and strong on defense. We only scored one goal in our first series against them. It'll be a big test for us."
The puck will drop at 2:07 p.m.
