Huskies split at UAH after 3-1 loss Saturday

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Michigan Tech fell 3-1 to Alabama Huntsville Saturday (Feb. 1) at the Von Braun Center. Tommy Parrottino made it a one-goal game in the third period, but the Chargers scored an empty netter to seal the win. Tech is now 15-13-3 overall and 10-10-2-0 in the WCHA. UAH improved to 2-20-4 overall and 2-14-4-1 in league play.

"It's obviously very disappointing," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "We expected a lot better focus tonight, especially with the amount of work we put in to prepare for this series. Credit Huntsville. They played hard all weekend.

"I truly believe we have the talent and ability to be a great team. We just need to continue to work hard and find that individual accountability day in and day out."

Down 2-0 entering the third period, Parrottino scored his eighth of the season and second in the last three games with a backhanded rebound after a shot by Colin Swoyer was saved at the 12:12 mark. Eric Gotz also assisted on Parrottino's 14th career goal.

Parrottino then drew a penalty with 2:14 remaining on a breakaway. The Huskies didn't receive a penalty shot but Brian Halonen nailed the post on the ensuing power play and goaltender Matt Jurusik went to the bench for the 6-on-4 advantage.

Liam Izyk took a full ice shot into the open net with 1:13 left to seal the win.

Tech racked up 68 shots on the evening with 30 getting through to the net. Mark Sinclair had 29 saves for the home team. Matt Jurusik stopped 18 shots for the Huskies in his 100th collegiate game and 50th in a Tech uniform.

Connor Wood opened scoring for the Chargers 8:36 into the game with a shot that deflected off a Tech defenseman's skate and into the back of the net. Ben Allen assisted as he dug the puck out of the corner.

Tech's best chance in the second period came after TJ Polglaze stole the puck behind the net and fed it out front to Raymond Brice. Sinclair was there for the save 7:00 in.

Jack Jeffers made it 2-0 UAH with 2:23 left in the second period when he cleaned up a rebound on the power play. Liam Izyk and Christian Rajic assisted.

Each team was whistled for 10 minor penalties. Tech was 0-for-6 on the power play and 6-for-7 on the penalty kill.

Tech returns home for the annual Winter Carnival series next weekend (Feb. 7-8) against Lake Superior State. The two teams will play a total goal series for the MacInnes Trophy with the puck dropping at 7:07 p.m. Friday and 5:07 p.m. Saturday.
