Huskies sweep Alaska Anchorage with 4-1 win Saturday

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Michigan Tech picked up its third WCHA sweep of the season with a 4-1 victory over Alaska Anchorage Saturday (Dec. 7) at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The Huskies scored four unanswered goals and improved to 10-7 overall and 8-6 in the WCHA.
"I thought the guys played well," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "I'm really enjoying coaching this group. We started out the year 1-5 in the league and I give the players a ton of credit for not panicking and getting down and staying the course and building confidence."
Saturday's second period was much like Friday's third. UAA opened scoring and the Huskies responded with a pair of goals.
Tyler Rockwell tied the game with his first goal of the season at 12:06 of the second. The Seawolves tried to rim the puck around and out of the zone, but Rockwell held it in at the line and fired a wrist shot over the blocker of Kris Carlson. Rockwell's third career goal was unassisted.
Almost 5:00 later Trenton Bliss scored a beauty on the power play to put the Huskies in front. He dragged the puck through the circle and roofed a shot over Carlson for his seventh of the season and fourth on the power play. Eric Gotz and Seamus Donohue assisted on the 13th career goal for Bliss.
Tommy Parrottino made it a two-goal game with his fifth of the season 1:31 into the third period. He caught a stretch pass from Gotz and slipped the puck under the goaltender for his 11th career tally. Tech goalie Matt Jurusik also assisted on the play.
"I just jumped off the bench and found a nice hole," Parrottino said. "Eric Gotz found me and I went down and shot it on the net and it trickled in."
UAA (2-11-3, 2-8-2-2 WCHA) tried to add the extra attacker but was whistled for a late penalty and Tech capitalized again. This time it was Alec Broetzman finding space in the slot and burying his sixth of the season and third on the power play with 3:44 remaining. Alex Smith and Logan Pietila assisted with the setup feeds.
Tech piled on 43 shots, totaling 85 in the series. Carlson had 39 saves for the visitors and Matt Jurusik stopped 21-of-22 shots for the Huskies.
"Matt's been steady for us," added Shawhan. "I wouldn't trade him for anybody in the country. We're riding him and there's nobody playing better than him right now."
Alex Frye scored the lone goal for the Seawolves 7:11 into the second period with assists going to Taylor Lantz and Rylee St. Onge
The Huskies were 2-for-5 on the power play and 1-for-2 on the penalty kill.
Tech remains at home next weekend with a matchup against No. 5 Clarkson. The two teams met in New York last season with the Golden Knights edging the Huskies in a pair of one-goal games.
"I think we've found some things that work for us," Broetzman said. "We've had good practices and we just have to keep it going."
