Tech Unveils 2016-17 Hockey Schedule

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Four series against teams from last year's NCAA tournament field, a trip to the 52nd Great Lakes Invitational and 14 games against in-state rivals are among the highlights of the 2016-17 Michigan Tech hockey schedule, which was unveiled today (May 19).

The nationally ranked Huskies open their 96th season of hockey with a non-conference series at former WCHA foe Minnesota Duluth on Oct. 1-2, renewing a rivalry that dates back to 1952-53. Tech jumps right into league action the next weekend (Oct. 7-8) to start the defense of its MacNaughton Cup title with a road test against Minnesota State before returning to the Copper Country and the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena for a two-game set with Alabama Huntsville on Oct. 14-15

Tech closes the month of October with back-to-back rivalry weekends. The Huskies travel downstate on Oct. 21-22 for the 226th and 227th all-time meetings with Michigan before starting the next chapter of the Tech-Northern Michigan rivalry in a home-and-home affair (Oct. 28 in Houghton; Oct. 29 in Marquette).

November features one series in Houghton – a two-game WCHA set vs. Lake Superior State on Nov. 11-12 – sandwiched between a trip to East Lansing to take on Michigan State (Nov. 4-5) and a two-week excursion to Alaska for matchups with Alaska Anchorage (Nov. 18-19) and Alaska Fairbanks (Nov. 25-26).

The Huskies are back at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena Dec. 2-3 to play host to Bemidji State before invading Bowling Green on Dec. 9-10. The holiday break ends Dec. 29 with another date with Michigan in the GLI semifinals at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

The non-conference slate concludes on Jan. 6-7 with a pair of games in South Bend, Indiana, vs. Notre Dame. The Huskies then have four WCHA showdowns at the Mac in January – vs. Alaska Anchorage (Jan. 13-14) and Minnesota State (Jan. 20-21) – which lead into four conference outings on the road, as Tech will play at Alabama Huntsville on Jan. 27-28 before heading to Bemidji, Minnesota, to meet up with Bemidji State on Feb. 3-4.

Michigan Tech welcomes Ferris State to Houghton on Feb. 10-11 for the annual Winter Carnival series and wraps up the 2016-17 regular season with another edition of the Tech-Northern rivalry (Feb. 24 in Marquette; Feb. 25 in Houghton for Senior Night).

The new WCHA playoff format begins this season and will feature home-site games for the duration of the conference tournament. The first round and semifinals will each be best-of-three series at the higher seed, while the WCHA Championship Game will be a one-game, winner-takes-all matchup at the highest remaining seed.

The first round is set for March 3-5, while the semifinal series will be played March 10-12 and the championship game will take place on Saturday, March 18.
