Tech falls to NMU in GLIAC Semifinals Play Video

HOUGHTON, Mich. - Michigan Tech men's basketball fell in the GLIAC semifinals 78-71 Saturday afternoon at SDC Gymnasium in front of 840 fans. Senior Owen White scored 30 points and Trent Bell marked a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds, but Max Bjorklund helped the Wildcats advance to the Championship with 35 points. 

The Huskies (21-7, 16-4 GLIAC) will find out if they qualify for an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Tournament Sunday at 10:30 p.m. during the selection show.

Northern Michigan (18-11, 12-8 GLIAC) will [8] Davenport in the Championship at SDC Gymnasium, Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Max Bjorklund helped the Wildcats take an early 9-4 lead. Then Bell inserted energy with a dunk and the Huskies went on a 14-3 run to go ahead 19-12. The 'Cats found their outside shooting touch to take a 36-32 edge into halftime.

Bjorklund got hot in the second half and posted 12 points over the final 10 minutes of the game for a 12-2 scoring run. White made a three-pointer with eight seconds left to cut the margin to 74-71, but Bjorklund went 4-4 from the free throw line late to seal the win for NMU after a Tech turnover.

"I thought Northern played a spectacular game," said head coach Josh Buettner. "Max (Bjorklund) was special today. We tried to make some adjustments. A couple of them we didn't execute but he had an answer for all of them. They had some guys really step up and do some damage. We withstood their initial run but the last six minutes of the first half I felt was the difference in the game."

Adam Hobson helped the Huskeis with 14 points. The Huskies shot 40.6-percent overall, including 32.1-percent from beyond the arc. Northern Michigan surrendered just seven turnovers and shot 49.2-percent. Ben Wolf had 14 points and Nick Wagner contributed 13.
