Men's Basketball Suffers 84-77 Setback at Michigan Tech

The Warriors will next be in action for Quincy's Hansen-Spear Funeral Home Classic.

HOUGHTON, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (4-4 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) was unable to maintain a halftime advantage and fell 84-77 to the Michigan Tech Huskies (2-6 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon inside the SDC Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
MTU tallied the first four points before a layup from Carmelo Harris (Flint, Mich. / Beecher) put the Warriors on the board just under two minutes into the game.  That marked the beginning of a 6-0 Wayne State run over the next minute and 42 seconds.

After a three-pointer from Adam Hobson tied the score at nine coming out of the first media timeout, the Green and Gold tallied the next nine points to lead 18-9 with 13:03 to play.  During the 9-0 run, Kareem Aburashed (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day (Macomb CC)) made two layups while Hutch Ward (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Central) drained a triple.

WSU led by as many as 10 (25-15) when Kaimen Lennox (Kansas City, Mo. / Truman (Hutchinson CC)) hit a three-pointer with just under 10 minutes remaining.

The two squads played nearly even in the second half of the opening 20 minutes, with the Huskies outscoring the visitors by one (24-23) over the final 10 minutes.

Second Half
The final 20 minutes belonged to the home team as Michigan Tech outpaced WSU 46-29 in the final stanza.  The Green and Gold upped its halftime advantage to 12 (53-41) following a Matt Coffey (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) layup and Harris triple.

The tides began to turn when MTU cut Wayne State's lead to one (56-55) with a 14-2 scoring advantage between the 17:36 and 12:34 marks, which forced the Warriors to call timeout.

WSU notched the next five points via jumpers from Colin Golson, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Ferndale (Siena / Eastern Michigan)) and Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy), but Golson and Coffey both fouled out down the stretch and the Huskies outscored the Warriors 26-16 in the final 10:53 to emerge with the victory.

TEAM STATS
Despite MTU's hot scoring down the stretch, Wayne State still recorded a better field goal percentage, shooting 49 percent (30-of-61) from the floor compared to Michigan Tech's 43 percent (25-of-58).  However, MTU drilled nine of its 17 three-pointers (53 percent), while WSU made 35 percent (8-of-23) from beyond the arc.  The Huskies went to the free throw line 30 times and sank 25 shots (83 percent), with the Warriors shot 64 percent (9-of-14) from the charity stripe.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Harris scored a game-best 22 points.  Aburashed's 11 was a season high, while Golson, Jr. also scored in double-figures for the contest with an even 10.  All three along with Tamario Adley (Detroit, Mich. / Warren De La Salle (Macomb CC)) grabbed five rebounds.

LEADING THE HUSKIES
Marcus Tomashek led all MTU scorers with 20 points.  Dawson Nordgaard (19) Hobson (16), and Pete Calcaterra (11) also notched more than 10 points.  Calcaterra garnered eight rebounds and Josh Terrian dished out four assists.
