William C. Gappy

The most successful coach in men's basketball history at MTU, Bill Gappy collected 146 wins during his 12 seasons (1972-83, 84-85) guiding the Huskies hoop program. He led MTU to its only outright league title in the history of the program, that coming in 1979-80 as a member of the Northern Intercollegiate Conference. For his efforts, Gappy earned league Coach of the Year honors and was also honored by his peers as Michigan's Small College Coach of the Year.

While men's basketball coach, he also served as assistant athletic director and was a member of the University's faculty. Gappy was honored with the prestigious Claire M. Donovan Award in 1980-81.
