Lange & Loughlin Earn All-Region Accolades at NCAA XC Midwest Regionals

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Michigan Tech student-athletes Sam Lange and Hannah Loughlin earned All-Region honors at the NCAA Midwest Regional Cross Country Championship at the Angel Mounds on Saturday morning.

In the team race, the women placed eighth overall with 291 points, while the men of Michigan Tech placed seventh with 216 points, two points shy of sixth place and 17 points away from fifth-place.

"We raced really well today," head coach Kristina Owen said. "Both our men and women ran well and had fast times. The end of the season is always a little bittersweet, it looks like we probably won't be getting an at-large spot for nationals, but we hold our heads high knowing we gave it everything we had.

"We've got a great team full of wonderful human beings and I'm really proud of how we performed on and off the course this season."

Hannah Loughlin remained the low-stick for the women, placing 24th overall in 21:15.66. The freshmen duo of Sophia Rhein and Hailee Zimpel continued to produce for the Huskies, seeing Rhein (21:54.93) place 59th overall and Zimpel (22:03.16) 65th, respectively.

Anabel Needham was the third point-scorer for Michigan Tech, breaking 22 minutes to place 62nd overall (21:57.63).

Ingrid Halverson was the fifth runner for the Black & Gold, with her time of 22:24.79 placing her 81st overall.

Mady VanWieren and Cedar Gordon rounded out the Huskies top-seven, placing 82nd and 88th, respectively.

The Huskies top-five spread was just under 1:10.

Sam Lange once again was the first Husky finisher, with his time of 31:22.67 earning him 21st overall.

Nick McKenzie finished top-30 with a 28th-place finish in 31:41.42. Henry Snider (32:12.02) and Callen Carrier (32:12.78) finished together in 48th and 49th place, respectively. Carrier produced a stellar performance for his first NCAA regional meet, placing within the top-50.

Sam Marshall was the fifth runner for Michigan Tech, making his regional meet debut with a 71st place finish in 32:39.80 to bring the top-five spread to 1:17.

Naseem Dhaouadi (80th place) and Ben Conlin (155th place) rounded out the Huskies top-seven.

"Both teams set some lofty goals that we likely have fallen short of," assistant coach Robert Young added. "When you look at today's results though, it's hard to be much other than proud of our teams. We ran good and brave races and can be proud of the efforts we gave out there.

"These teams grew a lot this fall and our future is bright as we brought a lot of younger student-athletes to this meet. We will miss our seniors, but they can be proud of the impact and legacy they are leaving behind."

Teams and individual runners who did not earn qualify automatically will now wait for the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championship committee to make its at-large selections. The full field will be announced on Monday, Nov. 6 on NCAA.com.
