Irwin and Pengelly Earn All-GLIAC Honors at Tiffin

TIFFIN, Ohio — The Michigan Tech men's cross country team finished fifth and the women were 10th at the GLIAC Championships hosted by Tiffin today at Seneca Hills Golf Course. Sean Pengelly and Deedra Irwin both finished 16th in their respective races to earn All-GLIAC Second Team honors.

"It was a great day for us in both men's and women's," said Tech coach Joe Haggenmiller. "A ton of our athletes ran personal records. It was a fast course, but not ideal conditions with the cold and wind. I'm really proud of our athletes."

Pengelly paced the men's team with a time of 24:30 over eight kilometers—20 seconds faster than his previous PR. Jani Lane was next in 28th position with a time of 25:09. Jason Saliga was just nine seconds back in 32nd place. Calvin Nitz and Daniel Kulas rounded out Tech's top five with 42nd (25:43) and 47th (25:46) place results, respectively.

On the women's side, Irwin posted a 21:26 time on the six-kilometer course. Emily Vigil was next with a 64th place showing in a time of 23:05. Ulrika Axelsson (76th, 23:23), Liz Bloch (85th, 23:37) and Alice Flanders (87th, 23:39) were the Huskies' next three across the line.

Both Tech teams improved on their GLIAC Championship finishes from a year ago when they ran on their home course. The men were sixth, and the women were 12th in 2013.

"The guys result is probably the best we've had in modern GLIAC history since the Ohio schools were added," said Haggenmiller. "And for the women to get 10th is nothing to be ashamed of since six GLIAC teams are ranked in the top 25 nationally.

"Overall, these are really good results that hopefully we can build on at the regional meet."

Michigan Tech will have next weekend off before traveling to Evansville, Ind., for the NCAA Midwest Region Championships on Nov. 22.
