Runners Compete at UP Championship

MARQUETTE, Mich. — The Michigan Tech cross country teams ran at the UP Championships at NMU Golf Course today in their final tune-up for the GLIAC Championships in two weeks.

Sean Pengelly won his second consecutive race by covering the eight kilometers in 25:27. He was :30 ahead of the next male finisher. Jani Lane was the second Husky across and fourth overall at 26:26. Calvin Nitz (26:40), Jason Saliga (26:47) and Daniel Kulas (27:00) rounded out Tech's top five.

The women's squad was led by Deedra Irwin's fourth-place effort. She ran a 22:24 over six kilometers—just six seconds off her PR. Freshman Emily Vigil was Tech's next finisher in 10th with a time of 23:50. Sonja Hedblom (12th, 24:03), Liz Bloch (13th, 24:05) and Ulrika Axelsson (14th, 24:08) came in a tight pack to round out the top five.

"Our athletes ran really well today," said coach Joe Haggenmiller. "The weather was great, and it was a positive day.

"We look forward to rolling into the GLIACs in a couple weeks. I like where we're at."

The GLIAC Championships will be held at Tiffin, Ohio, on Saturday, Nov. 8.
